An incorrect name on your Aadhaar can lead to severe issues with KYC (Know Your Customer) compliance, bank accounts, and benefits distribution. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) offers simple, step-by-step processes for residents to perform an Aadhaar name correction both online and offline.

The UIDAI is overhauling the Aadhaar update process to make it faster and eliminate unnecessary paperwork. The new system will allow for automatic verification of a user’s information by cross-referencing it with existing government databases, including PAN cards, passports, and ration cards, significantly reducing the need for repeated document uploads. Furthermore, the UIDAI will begin accepting utility bills, such as electricity bills, as valid proof for address changes.

A new revamped mobile app is also on the way, which will introduce a secure digital Aadhaar with QR code functionality. This upgrade will remove the requirement for physical photocopies, letting users securely share a digital or masked version of their Aadhaar whenever necessary.

How to update Aadhaar name online

The most convenient method for updating Aadhaar name online is through the official UIDAI Self Service Update Portal (SSUP). This method requires the user’s mobile number to be registered with Aadhaar for OTP-based verification.

1. Access the portal: Visit the official UIDAI website and navigate to the Self Service Update Portal (SSUP).

2. Login and OTP: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the Captcha code. Click ‘Send OTP’ and enter the six-digit OTP received on your registered mobile number to log in.

3.  Select demographic data: Choose the option to ‘Update Demographic Data’ and select ‘Name.’

4. Enter correct name: Carefully enter the correct name exactly as it appears on your supporting document. Remember that Aadhaar allows only one name change attempt, so accuracy is paramount.

5. Upload proof of identity (PoI): Upload a scanned copy of a valid PoI document. Accepted documents include your passport, PAN card, Voter ID, or Driving License.

6.  Review and submit: Review the entered details and click ‘Submit.’ You will receive an Update Request Number (URN), which can be used to track the status of your Aadhaar name correction status.

Note: The name change facility can be used only once per Aadhaar holder, making the initial application accuracy essential for a hassle-free Aadhaar update.

The name correction is typically processed and reflected within a few days to a few weeks, after which the new e-Aadhaar can be downloaded.
