Ganpati Visarjan 2025 rules: After ten days of grand festivities, Ganesh Utsav is set to conclude on Saturday, September 6, 2025, with Ganesh Visarjan. An emotional moment for Lord Ganesha devotees who bid a tearful adieu to their favourite deity, the day marks the return of Ganpati to his celestial abode on Mount Kailasha. It is said that Lord Ganesha visits his devotees on Earth for a period of ten days and blesses them with success, prosperity, and wealth. Many devotees keep a fast during the festival. This year, the festival began on Wednesday, August 27, and would conclude on Saturday, September 6.

While Ganesh Visarjan is performed on Anant Chaturdashi, on the eleventh day of the festival, it is also done on the third, fifth or seventh day from the day of Ganesha Chaturthi. It is to be noted that all these days are odd numbers. On the day of Anant Chaturdashi, Lord Vishnu, Mother Yamuna and Sheshnag are worshiped, and Anant Sutra is tied on this day, according to Drik Panchang.

The festival begins with sthapana where Ganesha idols are kept on a raised platforms in homes or padals. The idol size may vary from small to big. Many people craft the idols at home with clay and other eco-friendly materials. The trend of eco-friendly Ganesha is also catching up. Ganesh aarti is performed every day and bhog is offered to the lord. People visit grand pandals set up to celebrate Ganpati’s arrival to the earth. After ten days of fasting, feasting, colourful rangolis and grand celebrations, the festival concludes on the eleventh day with a grand procession where devotees carry the idols of elephant-headed God with much fanfare and immerse them in water bodies. These days, many people perform the visarjan inside their homes in tubs also. Visarjan marks the return of Lord Ganesha to the home of his parents Lord Shiva and Parvati.

Ganpati Visarjan, the last day of the festival, has a lot of significance for those celebrating it as people say goodbye to their beloved deity with chants of – “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Agle Baras Tu Jaldi Aa”. Here are some important rules related to the ritual that one must know.

Ganesh Visarjan Dos

  • Before the Ganesh Visarjan, Ganesh Aarti is performed and the deity is offered prasad of his favourite sweets including modak, laddoo, fruits, and flowers.
  • When it’s time for the visarjan, he idol is lifted gently as a mark of reverence and also to avoid breaking it.
  • Uncooked rice or akshat is offered to Ganpati and curd is applied to the idol’s hands, wishing him luck for his journey back.
  • Coconut, jaggery, and grains are wrapped in a red cloth for the deity’s journey.
  • While immersing the idol into the water, prayers are done as people hope for the lord to come again early next year. In case the ritual is performed at home, the leftover water can be used to water plants.

Don’ts

  • Do not use non-biodegradable and toxic materials to make Ganesha idol as it pollutes water. Bright and synthetic colours should also be avoided.
  • Do not burst firecrackers in crowded areas as they can harm children and animals.
  • Avoid wearing synthetic fibres as they may catch fire from the crackers.
  • Avoid pushing people and stay calm in crowded places.
  • Stay safe while immersing the idol into water and do not go too deep into the water.
  • Do not throw flowers, garlands, or other non-biodegradable items into water bodies.
  • These simple rules will ensure you have a happy and peaceful Ganesh Visarjan, as you bid adieu to your favourite deity.
