For millions of fans, Mannat isn’t just a house, it’s a dream. The name itself holds the emotion, devotion, and awe. Located in Mumbai’s Bandstand neighbourhood, this beautiful sea-facing bungalow is not just where Shah Rukh Khan lives, it’s a reflection of his journey which shows how a middle-class Delhi boy with big dreams became one of the world’s biggest movie stars. Every year on his birthday, fans gather outside Mannat with a hope to see a glimpse of their beloved King of Romance.
This year, as Shah Rukh Khan turned 60, the crowd outside his home was as massive as ever. But unlike previous years, the superstar couldn’t step out to meet them, something which pained the superstar as much as his fans.
From Delhi dreams to Mumbai’s most famous address
Before Mannat became a landmark, Shah Rukh Khan was just a boy from Delhi who dared to dream big. In the 1980s, he left his hometown with little more than determination and a belief in himself. His move to Mumbai changed everything. From television shows like Fauji to blockbuster films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Chak De! India, Shah Rukh built a name for himself like no one else.
That year, he purchased a heritage bungalow in Mumbai’s Bandstand area, then known as Villa Vienna, for around Rs 13 crore. He renamed it Mannat, meaning “a wish,” and began transforming it into the majestic home we see today.
Mannat, now one of the city’s most visited celebrity homes, was once just a house that caught his attention during the shooting of Yes Boss (1997). It stood facing the Arabian Sea, elegant yet quiet. SRK had promised himself that he would one day own it and he did.
More than two decades later, Mannat is now worth an estimated Rs 200 crore as per Vogue India and is one of India’s most famous celebrity homes.
The making of Mannat
Today, Mannat is more than a home. It’s a six-storey masterpiece designed by Gauri Khan herself in collaboration with architect Kaif Faquih. It took nearly a decade to design, decorate, and bring to life. As Gauri once told Vogue India, “Mannat unfolds at every level, with a unique and distinctive concept on each floor.”
The house perfectly blends old-world charm with modern comfort. Its signature white pillars and black gates instantly catches the eye of anyone passing by. Inside, beige, brown, and white dominate the house, with dark wooden flooring and luxurious furniture. Gauri’s design philosophy is far from minimalist. “I love things that are warm, eclectic, personal, and collectible,” she said. “My home has been built gradually over years of collecting pieces I feel passionate about.”
Each family member has added their touch. Suhana’s love for ballet is reflected in her room, while Gauri’s favourite elements include a jade Ganpati statue and a life-sized marble Radha-Krishna sculpture.
Mannat’s terrace: A private yet public space
For Shah Rukh Khan, the terrace of Mannat holds special significance. It allows him to step out and wave to his fans on special occasions like Eid and his birthday. Gauri calls it her ‘happiest place’ in the house. On festive nights, this terrace lights up as the Khans host gatherings and celebrations under the open sky.
The living room
Step into the Khans’ living room, and you’ll see that every corner has a story. As per Vogue India, the living room has a rustic brick wall displaying their modern art collection, while a vintage safe converted into a bar becomes a conversation starter. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows flood the room with natural light, beautifully balancing the bold hues of plum, brown, and black.
Gauri has filled the room with statement pieces, black vases from Paris, a canvas by Subhash Awchat, and a gilded Ravinder Reddy sculpture that serves as the room’s showstopper.
Shah Rukh and Gauri’s bedroom
Walk upstairs, and you’ll find the couple’s bedroom. The room has pristine white marble floors, a brown velvet couch, and a king-sized bed adorned with gold and animal-print pillows. The colour scheme is that of beige, brown, and gold which adds warmth, while a reflective headboard and large windows make the space appear open and bright.
Gauri Khan’s dream closet
Few spaces in Mannat capture Gauri Khan’s elegance as perfectly as her walk-in closet. With white marble floors, a leather throne, and gold-detailed racks, the closet is every girl’s dream. “I like neutral shades and classic materials like leather, which look better with age,” she told Vogue India. The closet has an Art Deco-style dressing table and rows of perfectly arranged outfits and shoes.
AbRam Khan’s room is all things fun
While the rest of Mannat follows a muted palette, little AbRam’s room is full of colours. With white and bright blue interiors, hardwood floors, and a cream armchair, the space reflects youthful energy. It’s also filled with electric cars, Lego sets, and his favourite pillow.
Another part of the house has been converted into a play area for AbRam, with decor that’s lighter and livelier than the rest of the home.
Shah Rukh Khan’s study
One of the most iconic spaces in Mannat is Shah Rukh’s study. This is where he spends long hours reading, writing, and meeting people. The neoclassical-style room is lined with leather fittings, ornate shelves, and elegant columns. But what makes it truly special is his ‘wall of fame’, a collection of awards he’s won over his illustrious career, displayed proudly among stacks of books.
The home theatre
For a man who has dedicated his life to movies, it’s no wonder that Mannat has a private theatre that feels straight out of a dream. As per Vogue India, the room has bright red walls, vintage Bollywood posters of Sholay, Mughal-E-Azam, and Ram Aur Shyam, and even Charlie Chaplin’s framed walking stick. The 42 burgundy leather recliners and mahogany velvet walls give the theatre an old-world feel.
Mannat: A symbol of dreams come true
Mannat is not just a home, it’s a story of hard work, faith, and destiny. From a small apartment in Delhi to this sprawling mansion by the sea, Shah Rukh Khan’s journey shows that dreams do come true.
At 60, as he stands on the balcony of his beloved Mannat, sometimes waving, sometimes just looking out at the sea, Shah Rukh Khan continues to inspire generations.
