In a devastating accident, celebrated Barbie doll designers Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi were killed in a car crash in Italy on Sunday, July 27. The car collision occurred on the A4 Turin-Milan highway near the Marcallo-Mesero tollbooth in Lombardy, after an 82-year-old motorist drove several miles in the wrong direction, according to People magazine.

Paglino, 52, and Grossi, 55, were not only long-time collaborators and co-founders of the acclaimed custom doll brand Magia2000 but were also life partners. Also involved in the crash was 37-year-old banker Amodio Valerio Giurni, who also lost his life. His wife, 36-year-old Silvia Moramarco, survived the crash and is currently undergoing treatment at Niguarda Hospital in Milan. The elderly driver, identified as Egidio Ceriano, also died at the scene.

Tributes pour in from Mattel

Mattel, the parent company of Barbie, posted a heartfelt tribute honouring the creative couple. On Barbie’s official Instagram page, they posted a moving message, remembering the duo not only for their creative brilliance but also for their boundless energy and passion.

“The Barbie team is heartbroken by the loss of Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, two treasured creators and Mattel collaborators who brought joy and artistry to the world of Barbie as Magia2000,” the statement read.

The tribute continued, “As passionate and talented designers and lifelong collectors, their spirit and love for the brand turned every creation they touched into a masterpiece. Beyond their remarkable talent, they shared an energy that lit up every space they entered.”

There was also a photo of the duo beneath a Barbie sign. “Whether leading the Italian Doll Convention in Milan or showcasing their talents and love for Barbie at doll shows all over the world, their presence brought warmth, laughter, and a sense of belonging.”

The post concluded with a message. “Barbie mourns the loss of two treasured artists whose work has forever shaped the world of dolls. Mario and Gianni, you will be missed.”
