Uttarkashi Tunnel Collapse: 41 workers were trapped after a portion under-construction tunnel from Silkyara end caved in on November 12 in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi. The rescue operation is underway but the rescue has met with multiple challenges since the operation began. The team is trying different approaches to safely rescue the trapped workers.

On Monday, National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) Managing Director Mahmood Ahmad informed that the work of the vertical drilling at Uttarkashi tunnel where 41 workers remained trapped will be completed by November 30.

According to experts, this incident may lead to psychological and physical implications for the workers.

“I am truly distressed to learn about the involvement of 41 labourers stuck in the tunnel for over 10 days. It is deeply concerning for all of us, and we fervently pray for their swift and safe rescue, reuniting them with their families in good health,” Dr NK Soni, Senior Consultant & Head- Internal Medicine & Diabetology, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Greater Noida told Financial Express.com.

What is the impact on mental and physical health during these incidents?

During such incidents, Mental health is of utmost importance, as stress induces anxiety, tension, and depression, triggering the release of catecholamine hormones, Dr. Soni revealed.

“This release can cause significant damage, affecting vascular structures, the heart, brain, and overall psyche. The physical aspect is equally critical, with factors such as sleep deprivation and anxiety contributing to health issues. Many labourers may also suffer from comorbid conditions like hypertension and diabetes, requiring regular medication and a controlled diet,” he told Financial Express.com.

He also emphasised that lack of access to medications can exacerbate these conditions, leading to uncontrolled glucose levels and blood pressure, further impacting their health.

“Beyond medical concerns, extended isolation can result in vitamin deficiencies, particularly vitamin D, weakening the body. While the body can sustain itself with stored calories for a few days, prolonged starvation can lead to the breakdown of proteins, fats, and muscles, causing weakness and muscle atrophy,” he revealed.

What needs to be done after these workers are safely rescued?

Dr. Soni explained that it’s crucial to acknowledge the potential long-term effects of this traumatic experience on both mental and physical health.

“Post-rescue, comprehensive medical examinations, and treatment will be essential to address their metabolic conditions, replenish nutritional deficiencies, and provide support for the enduring impact of the distress they’ve endured. My thoughts are with the families, and I sincerely pray for a swift resolution to their ordeal,” he said.
