In an era defined by rapid technological advancements, public sector organisations in India are not far behind in harnessing the power of cloud computing, data analytics, and generative AI to improve public service delivery. Prominent examples include the Co-WIN platform, which facilitates seamless Covid-19 vaccine registration and management, and DigiLocker, providing citizens with access to authentic government digital documents. Furthermore, the UMANG platform streamlines access to government services for Indian citizens, ensuring efficient service delivery.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is focusing on cloud adoption by India’s public sector to drive growth. A provider of cloud computing services on a metered, pay-as-you-go basis, in recent times it has formalised strategic partnerships with various government and public sector organisations in the country. It has also become an empanelled cloud provider of the ministry of electronics & IT.
According to Rahul Sharma, regional managing director, APJ, Public Sector, AWS, the company has been working closely in space technology, education, and genomics space to drive progress and transformation in the public sector. AWS has committed an investment of $12.7 billion in India by 2030; a significant part of this investment is expected to help in building scalable, secure, and resilient digital public infrastructure, Sharma said. The company has an extensive cloud infrastructure in Asia, comprising 10 AWS Asia Pacific Regions, 22 Edge locations, and five local zones, with four more local zones coming up.
“India holds a special place in AWS’s investment strategy to accelerate innovation. These investments contribute significantly to the gross domestic
product of countries across APJ, creating direct and indirect jobs while fostering the development of a digitally skilled workforce.
With the government’s ambitious goal of building a $1-trillion
digital economy by 2025, embracing cloud technology becomes crucial,” he added.
According to Nasscom, large-scale cloud adoption has the potential to contribute $380 billion to India’s GDP, accounting for approximately 8% of the country’s GDP. Furthermore, this shift to cloud services will generate 14 million direct and indirect employment opportunities by 2026.
Shalini Kapoor, country leader and chief technologist for the Public Sector at AWS India said, “Generative AI as a game-changer across industries. AWS is at the forefront of democratising access to cloud-enabled technologies such as artificial intelligence, generative AI, and machine learning. This democratisation paves the way for public sector organisations to develop innovative solutions that address pressing citizen challenges, fostering a digitally empowered society.”
