The Nifty 50 fell 172 points or 0.74% to trade at 23,172.70 while the Sensex was down more than 700 points or 0.93% to quote at 76,359.88. As Donald Trump swears in, the Indian equity indices opened Tuesday’s trading session gap-up but soon slipped to trade in the red. The NSE Nifty 50 opened 64 points or 0.27% higher at 23,253.15, while the BSE Sensex rose 76.44 points or 0.10% to open at 77,149.88.
The GIFT Nifty indicated a higher opening for the stocks. The GIFT Nifty was up 96 points or 0.41% at 23,450. During the pre-open session, the Nifty 50 was up 77 points or 0.33% at 23,421.65 while the Sensex was up 188 points or 0.24% at 77,261.72.
Apollo Hospitals, UltraTech Cements, Wipro, Shriram Finance, and BPCL were the top gainers in the Nifty 50. On the other hand, Adani Enterprises, NTPC, Trent, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Adani Ports were the major losers in the Nifty 50. Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Wipro, and ICICI Bank were the significant contributors to the rise of Nifty 50.
“Trump 2.0 has kicked off without much clarity on Trump’s likely economic decisions. In his inaugural address, he was clear on immigration but sounded vague on tariffs. The indication of a likely 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico suggests that the tariff hike policy will be implemented gradually,” said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.
Out of 2,308 stocks traded, 1,723 stocks were trading in the green while 538 declined, as per the data on NSE.
Bank Nifty opened 154 points or 0.31% higher to trade at 49,505.20. The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 21 points, or 0.04%, to open at 55,085.15.
Among the sectoral index, however, the Nifty Healthcare index was trading highest. However, the Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty Realty saw major cuts.
“The recovery (in Nifty) since the January 13 lows looks like a bearish flag, though, so caution remains the state of play. If the bulls fail to take out 23,471 and instead the market drops below 23,221, it would make the 23,048 support vulnerable,” said Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research at Axis Securities.
Sensex 30: Top gainers at this hour
At this hour, UltraTech Cement leads the Sensex 30 gainers, trading at Rs 10,733.80, up by 1.03%. Following closely, ITC has gained 0.72%, trading at Rs 440.90. HCL Technologies (HCLTECH) is also among the top performers, up 0.52% at Rs 1,805. Asian Paints shows a modest increase of 0.17%, trading at Rs 2,284.05, while Hindustan Unilever is up 0.09%, currently priced at Rs 2,347.40.
Sensex 30: Top losers at this hour
Among the Sensex 30 laggards at this hour, Zomato leads the decline with a sharp fall of 10.44%, trading at ₹215.80. Adani Ports follows, down by 3.01% at Rs 1,114.50. State Bank of India (SBIN) has slipped 2.15% to Rs 762.30, while NTPC is trading lower by 1.76% at Rs 330.15. ICICI Bank declined 1.71%, priced at Rs 1,211.80.

Among the top gainers, Apollo Hospitals leads with a 2.70% rise, trading at Rs 6,963.75. BPCL follows, up 1.75% at Rs 282.15. UltraTech Cement has gained 1.51%, trading at Rs 10,784.40, while Tata Consumer Products is up 1.37% at Rs 973.45. ITC is also in the green, rising 0.72% to Rs 440.85.

On the losers’ side, Trent has declined sharply by 4.43%, trading at Rs 5,820.25. Adani Ports is down 2.61% at Rs 1,118.70. State Bank of India has fallen 1.88% to Rs 764.60. ICICI Bank is down 1.70% at Rs 1,211.95, and Adani Enterprises has dropped 1.68%, trading at Rs 2,401.85.
