Due to increased reach and large branch networks, the assets of Public Sector Banks?(PSBs) have out grown private peers and foreign banks during the last five years (2005-06 and 2009-10).

Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bank of Baroda (BoB) have moved up in the banking league during the period under study. While PNB has climbed from the fourth to the second spot in terms of total business, Bank of Baroda has moved up a few notches from the number six spot to the third spot. HDFC Bank has risen from the ninth to the 8th position while ICICI has come down from the second spot to the sixth position.

State-owned banks have clocked a compounded growth rate of 22.10 compared with 20.56% for private banks and 21.77% for foreign banks.

The average total business (deposits and advances) of PSUs increased by 23.97% while for private banks it was 19.97% and for foreign banks 17.77%.

India?s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) clocked a CAGR of 20.85% in total assets, while the country?s biggest private sector bank, ICICI Bank, reported a much lower CAGR of just 9.61%.

SBI?s business grew a compounded 22.30% in the five years to March 2010 compared with 5.34% at ICICI Bank.

Citibank, the largest foreign bank by business, saw a 20.39%compounded rise in total assets while business was up14.05% in the five years to March 2010.

The total value of assets of of 27 PSBs rose from R19.99 lakh crore in 2005-06 to R44.44 lakh crore in 2009-10 while their total business moved up from R27.06 lakh crore to R63.93 lakh crore. Deposits increased from R16.09 lakh crore in 2005-06 to R36.92 lakh crore in 2009-10.

Among the fastest growing banks in the PSU space have been Punjab & Sind Bank and Corporation Bank, which are relatively smaller banks. The private banks which grew their assets the fastest were YES Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank, again smaller banks.

Among the 22 foreign banks, the highest CAGR in total assets was reported by Barclays Bank followed by DBS Bank. Barclays topped the list in terms of the fastest CAGR in business while DBS again made it to the second spot.
