4 kanwariyas killed in two different road accidents

Four low-intensity tremors felt in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh

Four low-intensity tremors were felt in Uttarakhand’s border district of Pithoragarh and adjoining areas, an official said on Monday. The first tremor of 4.2 magnitude hit at around 1.34 am on Sunday. It was followed by three more tremors, the two of which were of 2.7 magnitude and 2.8 magnitude, respectively, district disaster management officer Bhupendra Singh Mahar said. The three quakes that followed the first one occurred at around 1.37 am, 2.48 am and 6.52 am Sunday, respectively, he added. (PTI)

Niger waits for West African bloc’s response after junta rejects ultimatum

Niger was waiting on Monday for a response from the West African regional bloc after coup leaders in Niamey ignored a deadline to reinstate the ousted president – a move the bloc has warned could lead it to authorise a military intervention. The nomic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has said it will issue a statement on its next steps in response to the junta’s refusal to cave in to external pressure to stand down by Sunday following the July 26 power grab. A major fire broke out at AIIMS, Delhi. According to news agency ANI, the blaze was reported from the endoscopy room of AIIMS. Six fire tenders have been rushed to the spot. All people inside the room have been evacuated. Thick plume of smoke could be seen coming out of the window. (Read More)

Money laundering case: SC dismisses pleas of TN Minister Senthil Balaji, wife against his arrest

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed pleas of Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji and his wife Megala challenging the Madras High Court order upholding his arrest in a money laundering case. The top court also granted five day custody of Balaji to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) till August 12. A bench of Justices A S Bopanna and M M Sundresh also referred to a large bench the issue that police custody is not permissible beyond first 15 days of remand. (PTI)

Arrest over post against CM Yogi

A businessman from Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi was arrested by the local police over a WhatsApp post. According to the Indian Express report, the 35-year-old was the admin of a WhatsApp group in which a user allegedly posted a ‘derogatory’ comment against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The police said that Sahabuddin Ansari has been arrested since he didn’t take any corrective measure as admin of the WhatsApp group.

Curfew to be lifted in Nuh today

The local authorities in Haryana’s Nuh will lift the curfew at 9 am today. The relaxation in curbs will stay till 1:00 pm, news agency ANI reports. The curfew was imposed after the region witnessed communal clashes on July 31st. Over the weekend, the Nuh administration carried out anti-encroachment drive that saw demolition of several structures in the area.

Will Rahul Gandhi return as MP today? Speculations are rife as reports suggest that the office of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is set to issue the circular today. On Friday, the apex court had stayed conviction of Gandhi in “Modi surname” defamation case. The verdict essentially means that Gandhi can return as lawmaker.
