Train number 82501/82502 will ply between the New Delhi Railway station (NDLS)-Lucknow NE (LJN) route for six days a week. While Train number 82501 Lucknow-New Delhi Tejas Express will complete the journey in 6 hours and 15 minutes, Train number 82502 New Delhi-Lucknow Tejas Express will take 6 hours and 30 minutes.
The success of this new experiment by Piyush Goyal-led Indian Railways will make way for private operators to run trains in India. The Railway Board has already asked zonal railways to consider the feasibility of running private trains on 50 key routes including Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah.

Talking about the compensation measures adopted by IRCTC for Tejas Lucknow-Delhi Express, Railway Minister Piyush Goal said, "Compensation for Delay: In a first of its own, IRCTC to compensate passengers of the New Lucknow-Delhi Tejas Express in case of delay in the train schedule: Rs 100 in case of a delay of more than an hour, Rs 250 in cases of a delay exceeding 2 hours."

Indian Railways' first privately-run train has nine AC chair car coaches and one executive class air-conditioned chair car coach. The executive class air-conditioned chair car coach has a total of 56 seats. Nine AC chair car coaches have 78 seats each. Delhi-Lucknow Tejas Express has a capacity of carrying 758 passengers.
