It’s official, signed, sealed and will be delivered on April 2. We are talking about the 25% auto tariffs that will come into effect after US President Donald Trump confirmed that all foreign-made vehicles will be subjected to a 25% tax. He also declared April 2 as “Liberation Day”. Based on the Made in America Auto Index report by the Kogod School of Business at American University, we highlight the top vehicles that will be least affected by new auto tariffs.
Cars to stay affordable after April 2
Tesla continues to lead the way with the highest percentage of made-in-the-USA components. According to the Kogod School of Business at American University, Tesla’s best-selling EV, the Model 3, has the most locally sourced content. Analysts consider parts manufactured in the U.S. and Canada as domestic components as vehicles manufactured under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) are temporarily exempt from import taxes.
Based on the report, Model 3 Performance boasts 87% local parts, while Model Y Long Range and Model Y base variants share honours with 85%. The Cybertruck confirms a clean sweep by Tesla with 82.5% of domestic components.
