The Indian passenger vehicle (PV) market is one of the most competitive automotive markets in the world. While Maruti Suzuki leads the segment with over 40% market share on a monthly basis, the focus shifts to the second spot. For a long time, Hyundai has been the clear winner for the second spot but in recent years, sales of Tata Motors cars have shown a significant jump.

This is due to a more diverse range of products with better overall quality and performance manufactured and launched by Tata Motors over the course of the last few years. So did the Indian brand take over the Korean auto giant in the month of April when it comes to sales?

Tata Motors vs Hyundai: Cars sold in April 2024

No, Hyundai hasn’t yet lost hold of its second spot in the Indian PV market. The Korean carmaker has sold 50,201 units in India in April this year. That said, Tata Motors came very close with a monthly volume of 47,883 units sold last month. Both carmakers managed to register marginal YoY growths of 1% and 2%, respectively.

In March 2024 as well, Hyundai maintained a slender lead over Tata Motors with the former recording a monthly volume of 53,000 units whereas the latter sold 50,110 units. Both carmakers are very sought after brands in the country offering a wide range of products. While Hyundai is yet to reveal its official number of its EV sales, Tata Motors has declared a total EV volume of 6,364 units sold in March.

The success of both carmakers lies in their portfolio filled with a number of SUV options. The recent market trend favouring them has been beneficial to both car brands. In recent months, Tata has launched facelited iterations of Nexon and Nexon EV, followed by facelifted Tata Safari and Harrier. On the other hand, Hyundai has launched Exter, Creta facelift, and Creta N Line.

Both car brands have multiple launches lined up for the coming few months. Tata will launch ICE and EV versions of Curvv followed by Sierra EV, while Hyundai will be coming up with the Alcazar facelift and Creta EV.
