January 2025 saw hatchbacks making a strong comeback, securing the top two spots as the best-selling vehicles. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R claimed the number one position, followed by the Baleno. However, it was the Hyundai Creta that led the charge for SUVs. With 18,522 units sold, the Creta witnessed a 40 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth. Here’s a look at the other SUVs that kicked off the year with a bang.
Hyundai Creta: Table Topper

Hyundai started 2025 with a total sales of 65,603 units in January 2025. Of that number, 54,003 were sold within India, while 11,600 units were exported. The Creta SUV was a top performer for the company, achieving a new monthly sales record of 18,522 units. This is a massive jump for the Creta as it rolled out 12,608 units in December 2024. The South Korean auto manufacturer has attributed the strong Creta January sales to the new Creta Electric.
Tata Punch: First Runner’s Up

The Tata Punch’s sales figures include the internal combustion, all-electric, and CNG versions. As the most affordable SUV in Tata Motors’ lineup, it sold 16,231 units in January 2025, reflecting a 10 per cent decline compared to January 2024, when it had sold 17,978 units. However, the Tata Punch was the best-selling SUV in December 2024, with 15,073 units sold, marking a 9 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase.
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara: The Surprise Package

Call it the joker in the pack or the dark horse, but Maruti Suzuki has made a stunning move into the top three with the Grand Vitara securing the third spot in January 2025. India’s leading car manufacturer registered an impressive 15,784 units, marking a 17 per cent YoY increase. The Grand Vitara’s January 2025 performance is particularly remarkable, as it sold only 7,093 units in December 2024, showing an enormous surge in sales.
Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Nexon: The Best from the Rest

The Mahindra Scorpio continues to reach new milestones, registering 15,442 units in January 2025, reflecting an 8 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase. The SUV also saw a 7 per cent rise in sales in December 2024, with 12,195 units sold. Notably, three out of the top five SUVs are mid-sized vehicles, highlighting their growing popularity.
In positive news for Tata Motors, the Nexon has emerged as the top-selling sub-4 meter SUV, surpassing its rival, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. While the Nexon experienced a 10 per cent YoY decline, it still managed to sell 15,397 units in January 2025. The SUV had a tougher month in December 2024, with an 11 per cent YoY drop, recording 13,536 units sold.
