Tata Sierra patent reveals final production spec details

When launched, the Sierra range will most likely sit in between Curvv and Harrier in Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle lineup.

One of the most anticipated models showcased at Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 was the Tata Sierra. A couple of years ago, Tata Motors announced that it will bring the iconic Sierra nameplate back from the dead after a concept of the same was showcased at the Auto Expo 2023. The prototype showcased earlier this year at the Expo was a near-production prototype.

Around the same time, the homegrown carmaker filed patents for the upcoming Sierra which reveals how the final production-spec model will look. The patent image reveals subtle tweaks in the exterior design of the Sierra from the concept unveiled a couple of years ago, although the majority of the design remains unchanged.

Tata Sierra design patent: Exterior

To begin with, the patent features a high-mounted bonnet with a split headlamp design, including LED DRLs sitting, while the primary headlamp units are positioned on the bumper. It looks as though Tata will carry over the vertical strake-like detailing and the ‘Sierra’ lettering on the grille panel from the concept to the production-spec model.

As revealed previously, unlike the original Sierra of the 1990s which came with a 3-door setup, this one will get a more 5-door configuration. That said, like the OG Sierra, the new Sierra will also flaunt a boxy profile with tall pillars, and a flat roofline. Another noticeable change are the new alloy wheels different from the star pattern units seen in the prototype at the Expo.

The rear end isn’t visible in the patent but we expect Tata Motors to stick to the pre-production styling. Other visual highlights include a faux silver-coloured skid plate that gives a bull bar-like effect, vertically-stacked compact fog lamps, “Sierra” lettering in bold at the nose, flush-fitting door handles, squared wheel arches, and thick body claddings on the side.

Tata Sierra: Expected Interiors & Features

Tata Motors has kept the interiors of the Sierra’s cabin under wraps. However, we expect to to come fully-loaded with features such as a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a panoramic sunroof. A close glance on the patent image reveals cameras on the ORVMs and the front grille along with a radar sensor that should offer 360-degree camera and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System.

Tata Sierra: Expected Powertrain options

Tata Sierra will be available in both ICE and EV derivatives. The former will be available with petrol and diesel engine options. This includes a brand new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 168 bhp and 280 Nm and a familiar 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine powering Harrier and Safari. This unit is capable of pushing out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options will likely include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AT.

Specifications for the Sierra EV are yet to be determined but we expect it to borrow the same powertrain as the Harrier EV slated to launch soon. Expect the Sierra EV to offer a peak range of 500 km on a single charge.
