Tata has been breathing down Hyundai’s neck for a while and in November, has managed to beat the South Korean carmaker in retail sales, taking up the number two position behind Maruti Suzuki. This was an expected move, however, it also shows how Tata’s consistent updates and EV launches have helped the company beat Hyundai.
In November 2023, Tata Motors’ retail sales stood at 53,539 units, while Hyundai’s sales stood at 49,716 units. Compared to November 2022, Tata saw a 30 percent YoY growth, while Hyundai witnessed an 8.4 percent growth. Also, in terms of market share, Tata currently holds 14.8 percent, while Hyundai’s market share stands at 13.7 percent.
For Tata Motors, vehicles such as the Nexon and Punch have racked in good sales numbers, selling over 14,000 units each. The Nexon’s wide spread of powertrains is also contributing to sales as it caters to a wider customer base. Also, adding to the contribution is the clear change in consumer trends with car buyers preferring SUVs over other vehicle types.
For Hyundai, the Creta has been the best-seller for years and continues to do so, however, with an 11 percent drop in sales in November 2023. This was expected as the new Hyundai Creta will make its way to India in January 2024, which could change the sales volume for Hyundai and its market share.
The SUV buying trend is evident with Hyundai as well, because the Venue and the newly-launched Exter were the second and third-best-selling vehicles for the carmaker, while the i10, a car that was one of the best-sellers for Hyundai, has failed to make it to the list of top 20 best-selling cars in November. It is the same case with the i20 and the Tata Altroz as well.
