Ruling the Roads: New SUVs Launched in India in 2024

From Tata Curvv to Mahindra Thar Roxx, here’s a look at all the SUVs launched in 2024 from mainstream brands.

2024 witnessed a lot of activities in the passenger vehicle market with plenty of products launched throughout the year, especially SUVs. We all know that penetration of SUVs and crossovers have deepened over the last decade. Let us look at all the SUVs launched in India in the outgoing calendar year. (No luxury SUVs or facelifted models have been considered in this list).

1. Tata Punch EV

The year started with the launch of the all-electric Punch.ev which besides the electric powertrain got design and feature upgrades over its ICE-powered namesake. The Punch EV comes with two battery options— a 25 kWh and a 35 kWh— with a claimed single-charge range of 315 km and 421 km, respectively. The base mode with the 25kWh battery delivers 80 bhp and 114Nm of torque while the Long Range variant with the 35 kWh delivers 120 bhp and 190 Nm.

Price: Rs 9.99 lakh – 14.29 lakh (ex-showroom)

2. Force Gurkha 5-door

After a long wait, Force Motors launched a 5-door version of the Gurkha in May this year. Although it shares most of the components and features with its 3-door sibling, the Gurkha was never offered in a 5-door layout prior to this. It is powered by a 2.6-litre diesel engine which produces 138 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque. The unit comes paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, while 4-wheel-drive (4WD) with a low-range transfer case is offered as standard.

Price: Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom)

3. Citroen Basalt

Citroen introduced the Basalt in August this year. Based on the same platform as C3 and Aircross, the Basalt is essentially a coupe version of the latter. It is offered with two petrol engine options: a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated unit that produces 81 bhp and 115 Nm, and a 1-litre turbocharged unit developing 109 bhp and 205 Nm of peak torque.

4. Tata Curvv/Curvv EV

Tata introduced its own version of a coupe SUV around the same time as the Citroen Basalt both in combustion engine and fully-electric derivatives. The ICE-powered Curvv is offered in three engine options: two 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol units and a 1.5-litre diesel mill. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic offered with all engine choices.

Price Tata Curvv: Rs 10 – 19 lakh (ex-showroom)

On the other hand, the Curvv comes with two battery pack options: 45 kWh and 55 kWh. The former is mated to a single electric motor which produces 148 bhp and 215 Nm of peak torque while returning a claimed range of 502 km (ARAI) on a single charge. The 55 kWh unit is paired with a motor that pushes out 165 bhp and 215 Nm while promising a range of 585 km on a single charge.

5. Mahindra Thar Roxx

Mahindra launched the much anticipated 5-door version of the Thar in August this year. Called the Thar Roxx, it is available in two engine options: a 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol unit and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel mill. The former  produces up to 175 bhp and 380 Nm while the latter dishes out up to 173 bhp and 370 Nm of peak torque. The option of four-wheel drive is only available in diesel variants.

6. Skoda Kylaq

Skoda re-entered the sub-4 metre space in India when it introduced the brand’s first new subcompact SUV in the market. Called Kylaq, this sub-4 metre SUV  is offered only with a single 1-litre turbo-petrol engine option that produces 114 bhp and 178 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic.

7. Mahindra BE 6e

Mahindra launched two of its first Electric Origin SUVs ,built on the carmaker’s ‘INGLO’ platform, in November 2024. The first of them is the BE 6e, a coupe mid-size SUV which gets two battery options: 59 kWh and 79 kWh, offering a claimed range of up to 556 km and 682 km, respectively. It is powered by a rear-axle-mounted electric motor which punches out 228 bhp and 281 bhp, respectively.

8. Mahindra XEV 9e

The second Electric Origin SUV from Mahindra launched was the XEV 9e, another coupe but slightly larger SUV. Like BE 6e, this one also gets the same battery options: 59 kWh and 79 kWh. However, the XEV 9e with both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) drivetrains. This electric SUV offers a claimed driving range of up to 656 km (MIDC).
