Mahindra has trademarked the ‘Scorpio X’ nameplate, hinting at a new vehicle the carmaker’s working on. At the moment, sources suggest that it will be the name for the upcoming Scorpio-based pickup truck, which was showcased last year in its concept form, called the Global Pik Up. So if this is what Mahindra’s working on, here’s what to expect from the new Mahindra Scorpio X.
Mahindra Scorpio X: Platform and design
The Mahindra Scorpio X, rather, the Global Pik Up concept was unveiled last year in South Africa and the vehicle will be based on the Scorpio N’s platform. It will sport a monocoque chassis, similar to the new Scorpio N, unlike the older Mahindra Scorpio Getaway, which was underpinned by a ladder frame chassis.
On the design front, the concept features chunky bumpers, LED headlights, a large, upright grille, flared wheel arches, all-terrain tyres, and a roof-mounted light bar. When it comes to the production version, we can expect Mahindra to change certain design elements and give it a similar grille design and bumper to that of the Scorpio N, making it easy for production and keeping costs down.
Mahindra Scorpio X: Interior and features
The Scorpio X will get a twin cab setup, meaning it can accommodate either four or five occupants, including the driver. The interior should be similar to the Scorpio N again, with soft-touch materials, bolstered seats, and a dual-tone finish.
On the features front, expect Mahindra to offer the touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and other connectivity options from the Scorpio N as well, along with adjustable seats, a sunroof, and more. On the safety front, there will be multiple airbags, reverse camera, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX seat anchors, and more.
Mahindra Scorpio X: Engine specifications
Now, since the new Scorpio X is based on the Scorpio N, one would expect petrol and diesel engines, however, it is unlikely. Being a pickup and looking at its competition – Isuzu V Cross and Toyota Hilux – the Scorpio X could be offered with a sole diesel engine.
Speaking of diesel engines again, Mahindra offers the 2.2-litre diesel engine in two states of tune – 130bhp and 172bhp – and we can expect the latter, with a four-wheel-drive system to keep it relevant in terms of competition.
