Parliament Session 2024, Lok Sabha Session Day 2 Highlights: On the second day of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Dimple Yadav, Hema Malini, Asaduddin Owaisi and Kanimozhi Karunanidhi were among the prmoinent members who were sworn in. Union minister and BJP leader Narayan Rane, Supriya Sule from the NCP (SP), Arvind Sawant from the Shiv Sena (UBT), and Shrikant Shinde from the Shiv Sena were also among the newly-elected members who were sworn in on Tuesday. Yesterday, 262 newly-elected members of the Lok Sabha took their oath, with the remainder scheduled to be sworn in today.
Om Birla, the BJP leader nominated for the speaker’s post, also took his oath on Tuesday.
As many as 262 newly-elected MPs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, took their oaths on Monday. During the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc staged a protest march inside the Parliament complex, raising slogans about ‘saving democracy’ and displaying copies of the Constitution.

The Lok Sabha showcased India‘s linguistic diversity on Monday as newly-elected MPs took their oaths in various languages, including English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Dogri, Bengali, Assamese, and Odia. Among those swearing in Hindi were Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Urban Development Minister M.L. Khattar.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, representing Odisha’s Sambalpur, took his oath in Odia. Suresh Gopi, the first BJP MP from Kerala, invoked the gods with “Krishna, Guruvayurappa” before taking his oath in Malayalam. Shripad Yesso Naik, MoS for Power and Renewable Energy, chose Sanskrit for his oath, while MoS for Education and Development of North Eastern Region Sukanta Majumdar took his oath in Bengali.
Pune MP Muralidhar Mohol, MoS for Aviation, took his oath in Marathi. Union Minister Jitender Singh, representing Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur, opted for Dogri. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal took his oath in Assamese, and Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu did so in Telugu.
Steel and Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi took their oaths in Kannada, while Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy chose Telugu for his oath.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Tejasvi Surya who won the Lok Sabha election from Karnataka’s Bangalore South constituency, defeating Congress candidate, took oath as the member of the 18th Lok Sabha.
Surya polled 7,50,830 votes, while his opponent Congress candidate Sowmya Reddy received 4,73,747 votes.
BJP MP and Actor Kangana Ranaut, who won the Mandi Lok Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh on her electoral debut by a margin of 74,755 votes took oath as member of 18th Lok Sabha.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur, who secured the Hamirpur parliamentary seat for the fifth consecutive time by defeating his nearest rival, Congress candidate Satpal Raizada, with a margin of 1,82,357 votes, took oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha.
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, who won his 3rd term from North-East Delhi and defeated Kanhaiya Kumar by a margin of over one lakh votes, and Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of the late veteran leader Sushma Swaraj, who defeated AAP’s Somnath Bharti to win the New Delhi Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 78,370 votes, took oath as members of the 18th Lok Sabha.
Senior Congress leader Manish Tewari took his oath as the Lok Sabha MP from Chandigarh, choosing to speak in Punjabi. Tewari won in Chandigarh with a narrow margin of 2,500 votes over BJP‘s Sanjay Tandon.

Regarding the protest by INDIA bloc leaders, Union Minister Chirag Paswan said, “The issues related to the public should be raised but issues which create confusion should not be raised…”
On the NEET issue, he stated, “The government has nothing to hide…The government has taken this issue very seriously. Investigation agencies are conducting investigations. For the welfare of students, the decision will be taken shortly…The culprits will not be spared”
“The credibility of the exams itself held by the union government has become a big question. Tamil Nadu has always been saying that there are issues with NEET examinations,” said DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi on NEET row.

MP-elects are taking their oaths in alphabetical order by state. About half of the MPs are taking their oaths in Hindi or English. Sanskrit has also been a popular choice in recent sessions, with 44 MPs in 2019 and 39 MPs in 2014 taking their oaths in the language.
MPs must use the name listed on their election certificate and follow the official text of the oath.
Oaths and affirmations are personal choices for MPs. In the last Lok Sabha, 87% of MPs swore in the name of God, while 13% affirmed their allegiance to the Constitution. Some MPs have alternated between swearing in the name of God and making an affirmation in different terms.
“Tomorrow is June 25. They (Congress leaders) have projected themselves as the murderer of democracy (by marching with Constitution). It is the Constitution they murdered, democracy was murdered, all the civil, individual rights and freedom of press were taken away. This is really a black mark on democracy,” said BJP MP Basavaraj S. Bommai regarding Congress leaders marching with the Constitution book in the Parliament complex.
Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang outside the Parliament said, “I have come here to congratulate the Prime Minister on behalf of the entire Sikkim, of all people of Sikkim because he is one such Prime Minister due to whom the country has made a lot of progress. He has become the PM for the third time and I came to congratulate him.”
Regarding the changes in the northeast over the past 10 years, he said, “There has been a great change. There has been a transformation in the northeastern states after 2014. So, I would like to thank the PM and the entire Central Government…Under the guidance of PM Modi, all 8 northeastern states are connected to each other as well as to neighbouring countries…On 16th May 2025, Sikkim is completing 50 years and it is a golden occasion so I have invited PM on the occasion. He has accepted the invitation…”
The Lower House proceedings have resumed following a brief lunch break, with the swearing-in of newly elected MPs currently underway.
The Lok Sabha session has been adjourned till 2 pm.
AAP MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer slammed the Prime Minister’s remarks on the Emergency, stating, “For us ‘black day’ is today. Today MPs elected from across the country are coming here and today itself the Constitution is being shredded by the PM and his colleagues. The past 10 years were black days for us as dictatorship and murder of democracy are taking place across the country. Opposition leaders are being put behind bars…”
Regarding PM Modi’s address before the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha and his message to the Opposition, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer remarked, “You (BJP) too run it properly. You should have started it on a positive note, and given the opportunity to the one who is senior (K Suresh). This is just a Pro-tem Speaker post, he would not have been a permanent Speaker. Had you started it properly, Opposition too would have started properly. But we have seen them for the past 10 years…”
When questioned regarding Congress and other Opposition parties carrying copies of the Constitution to Parliament that day, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said, “The attack that the PM and Amit Shah are launching on the Constitution is not acceptable to us, we will not let this happen. So, we held the Constitution while taking the oath…Our message is going across, no power can touch the Constitution of India.”

Following the opposition India bloc protest outside Parliament premises, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, “No power can touch India’s Constitution; we will protect it.” This statement comes on the first day of the 18th Lok Sabha session.
INDIA bloc MPs gathered at Parliament on Monday to march together to the Lok Sabha on the first day of its 18th session, chanting slogans to “save the Constitution.”
Opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress’ Sudip Bandyopadhyay, and DMK’s TR Baalu, met at the spot once occupied by the Gandhi statue in Parliament.
Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi also joined MPs for the demonstration. They held copies of the Constitution and chanted slogans like “long live the Constitution,” “we will save the Constitution,” and “save democracy.”
Faizabad (Ayodhya) MP Awadhesh Prasad said, ” I will live up to the expectations of god-like voters of Faizabad…Our agendas will be decided now…we have good plans for Ayodhya.”

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh strongly responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent speech outside Parliament, saying the Opposition INDIA Bloc would closely monitor his actions during his third term.
In a post on X, Ramesh slammed Modi for not offering anything new and accused him of trying to distract from important issues. Ramesh referred to Modi as the “non-biological PM” and claimed he suffered significant defeats in the recent elections. He warned that the INDIA Bloc would hold Modi accountable for his time in office, claiming that Modi did not understand the voters’ true intentions.
Before the commencement of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, leaders from the Opposition INDIA bloc walked out in protest. They objected to the appointment of a BJP MP as the pro-tem Speaker, terming it a ‘constitutional violation.’
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said: “We are protesting because the provisions of the Constitution have been violated. The Constitution has been violated by the Narendra Modi government. The way the pro-tem speaker has been appointed is a clear violation of the Constitutional provision and clear violation of the earlier precedences..”
Following Prime Minister Modi’s oath as the Leader of the House, several Union Ministers took their oaths. Radha Mohan Singh and Faggan Singh Kulaste were sworn in subsequent to PM Modi. Union Defence Minister, elected from the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency, also took oath as an MP. This was followed by oaths from Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Piyush Goyal, and H D Kumaraswamy.
