Amid criticism of UGC’s draft guidelines on filling of reserved posts in higher education institutes, Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit on Sunday said that no posts in the varsity have been “de-reserved”. The new draft guidelines by the University Grants Commission that were in the public domain for feedback from stakeholders till January 28 suggest that a vacancy reserved for SC, ST or OBC candidates can be declared unreserved if enough candidates from these categories are not available. Bhutan’s liberal politician Tshering Tobgay, leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), officially began his second term as prime minister on Sunday, following elections earlier this month. To mark his appointment formally, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck handed a scarf to Tobgay, a statement posted on the king’s official facebook page said.
A 45-year-old woman died and 17 people were injured when a stage set up for a religious function at the Kalkaji temple here collapsed in the early hours of Sunday, police said. The tragic incident occurred around 12.30 am, they said, the deceased has been identified as Tina, a resident of Tughlakabad extension. According to police, a ‘jagran’ (religious function) was organised at the Mahant Parishar of Kalkaji temple on Saturday and around 1,600 people attended it. (PTI)
A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Gujarat‘s Kutch district on Sunday evening, but officials reported no damage to property or lives. The epicenter was near Bhachau in Kutch, according to the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR). The tremor occurred at 4:45 pm on Sunday, with its epicenter about 21 km north, northwest (NNW) from Bhachau, as per the latest update from ISR.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the platform didn’t show results for searches like “Taylor Swift nude” or “Taylor Swift AI.” Yet, harmless searches like “Taylor Swift singer” still provided results.

Two masked gunmen shot one person dead during Sunday service at a church in Istanbul, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, adding that authorities were working to capture the assailants. Four individuals from Nepal, riding bicycles and a scooter, tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Sonipat, Haryana. The incident took place past midnight at Mama-Bhanja Chowk, as confirmed by Inspector Ravinder Kumar of Civil Lines Police Station. A case has been registered based on the complaint of one injured cyclist. The car, seemingly speeding, resulted in injuries to the driver and two passengers.

A 15-year-old girl was attacked with acid by a 16-year-old boy in the national capital, said police. According to the police, the incident took place on Friday in the Burari area of Delhi. Police said that the boy was caught by the locals and was later handed over to the police. Preliminary investigations suggest that the boy was reportedly frustrated over a dispute with another girl after which he randomly attacked the victim, as a means of venting his anger. (ANI)
