A few years ago, world EV Day would have made no sense. However, currently, EVs have gained so much popularity and Indian OEMs, including startups, are ready to take on global players, in terms of product and tech. That said, here are notable EV makers in India that need mentioning and a slow clap.
Electric four-wheelers
In the four-wheeler space, two carmakers stand out — Tata and Mahindra. Tata led the revolution in India, making EVs affordable and helping the mass market gain hands, especially with the Nexon EV. Offered as Medium Range and Long Range, the Nexon EV saw two generations and eventually made way for more in the form of the Curvv, Harrier EV, and the upcoming Sierra EV and the Safari EV.

Mahindra acquired the first EV brand in India, Reva, many years ago and took time to enter the electric space. The Mahindra XUV400 was a good start but was no match for the Nexon EV. However, with the launch of the BE 6 and XEV 9e, Mahindra has proved that its products not only cater to India, but to the global markets as well. Packed with features, powerful electric motors, and an eye on performance, Mahindra is the company to watch out for on the global stage.

Electric two-wheelers

The electric two-wheeler space saw a boom — from startups to legacy players. One name that managed to cut a niche for itself was Ultraviolette. Having entered the market with a premium offering in the form of the F77, the motorcycle is in its second generation, and the portfolio has also expanded to a street motorcycle called the F77 Super Street, a maxi scooter called the Tesseract, and an enduro bike called the Shockwave. The company has managed to surpass 10,000 bookings for the scooter in 24 hours and pass the 1,000 bookings milestone for the Shockwave also in 24 hours.

The next two names are legacy players and we start with Bajaj. When the entire EV segment was creating something for the youngsters in the form of sporty scooters and a host of tech baked into them, Bajaj took it slow. The result was the Chetak, a scooter that looks timeless and feels premium. This was the mix needed and the company now leads the EV sales chart.

Next up, TVS. As with how Bajaj did, TVS entered the buzzing EV two-wheeler space with one product — the iQube. Focused more on being a family scooter, the iQube offers simplicity if needed, or tech. The scooter rides well, is practical, built well, and does its intended job in a calm manner — all the ingredients for success.
