The entry-level passenger electric vehicle segment in India is gaining momentum as two key players dominate this space — Tata and MG. Tata’s all-electric Tiago was the most affordable offering in this space, however, the MG Comet managed to undercut the Tiago. Moving to a segment higher, the Tata Nexon leads the segment and now, Volkswagen is looking at this space as well.

As per a report by Reuters, the VW group is planning to launch an entry-level electric SUV in India. “We are actively working on an entry-level EV. We are evaluating which VW Group platform can be best adapted to build a compact electric SUV in India,” said Piyush Arora, CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, to Reuters.

In the last few years, Volkswagen has completely revamped its offerings in India after the company pulled the plug on the Polo. The launch of the Virtus and Taigun has helped the company register steady growth. In the January-December period of 2022, Volkswagen India sold 1,34,667 units, while in 2023, the carmaker sold 1,45,713 units, an 8.2 percent growth.

Even Skoda saw an update in its range with the launch of the Slavia and Kushaq, which share their underpinnings, powertrain, and other components with the Virtus and Taigun. So if VW launches an EV, we could expect a Skoda version as well.

That said, the Skoda Enyaq, the brand’s first all-electric car was showcased at the ongoing Bharat Mobility Expo. The Enyaq made its global debut in 2022 and ever since, test mules have been seen in India, hinting at its launch timeline later this year.
