Hindalco Industries Ltd., the world’s largest aluminium company, has delivered 10,000 aluminium batteries to Mahindra for its EV SUVs, the BE 6 and XUV 9e. This also marks Hindalco’s official entry into the EV component sector with its new component manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. Speaking on this development, Hindalco’s Managing Director, Satish Pai, emphasized that this initiative signifies a strategic shift towards locally manufactured, high-performance EV components. He said, “Our Chakan facility represents a strategic shift in India’s EV ecosystem from import dependence to high-performance, localised aluminium solutions. We are proud to partner with Mahindra in this journey, which not only reflects our commitment to the mobility transition but also highlights Mahindra’s leadership in driving the electrification of mobility in India. With our engineering strengths and sustainability focus, we are well-positioned to co-create the next generation of automotive solutions.”
Lighter, more efficient aluminium batteries
Built with an investment of Rs 500 crore and spread across 5 acres, the Chakan facility currently has the capacity to produce 80,000 battery enclosures annually, with plans to double output to 160,000 units. These state-of-the-art battery packs cut down weight by 40% as compared to steel-based design, increasing driving range by 8–10% while enhancing battery safety and thermal management.
Equally noteworthy is the workforce behind the project — the facility employs nearly 100% women machine operators, setting a new benchmark for gender inclusivity in the manufacturing sector. The plant is expected to generate up to 1,000 jobs and aligns with the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ vision by reducing reliance on imports.
The batteries are developed in partnership with Mahindra and Executive Director & CEO (Auto and Farm Sector), Rajesh Jejurikar, said that Hindalco’s material and engineering innovations have been crucial in building efficient, safe, and sustainable battery solutions.
What next for Hindalco?
Looking ahead, Hindalco aims to broaden its reach by offering advanced aluminium solutions to both Indian and global OEMs. This includes structural and crash-relevant components for electric vehicles (EVs) as well as internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. As India rapidly embraces electric mobility, Hindalco’s strategic investments in future-ready technologies position it as a key enabler in the evolving automotive landscape. Its collaboration with Mahindra marks a pivotal step toward localising EV components, enhancing sustainability, and reducing import dependence. Through such initiatives, Hindalco is reaffirming its commitment to clean mobility and contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for India.
