If you thought that the Indian Premier League (IPL) was all about nail-biting finishes and keeping you glued to the edge of your seat, then the passenger vehicles sales figures are taking it to the next level by making Shane Warne proud with its monthly googlies. It was super over the moment when Hyundai Motor India managed to sneak past Tata Motors to bag India’s number two car manufacturer. Hyundai registered 51,820 units in the domestic market, while Tata Motors fell short by 204 vehicles.

SUVs propel automotive sales

Hyundai’s best-selling vehicle, the Creta, continues to be its knight in shining armour as the company claimed that it is the number one SUV as it sold 52,898 units from January to March 2025. Based on the retail figures, last month was a humbling experience for the South Korean manufacturer as it had to relinquish the number two title to Mahindra, while it was pushed down to fourth place. Signing off FY 24-25 on a high, Hyundai registered domestic sales of 5,98,666 units, which helped it reclaim the second position in the Passenger Vehicle sector. Hyundai surged ahead to become India’s largest exporter as it recorded 1,63,386 units in FY 24-25.

Tata Motors missed the second position by a whisker as it registered 51,616 units in domestic market and 5,56,263 units in FY 24-25, which includes 64,726 units of EVs. The Indian automobile manufacturer recorded over 50% in CNG sales. According to the company, the Punch is India’s No. 1 SUV in FY25.

It may not have been the best monthly sales for Mahindra as it slipped to fourth place, but it is the only top automaker that is only focused on SUVs. The company sold 48,048 units last month and saw an 18% growth compared to March 2024. With 5,51,487 units sold in FY 24-25, Mahindra is India’s number one SUV maker and registered a 20% rise year-on-year.
