The SUV segment remains the largest and most dominant in the Indian automobile market. Maruti Suzuki made a strong comeback in this segment by claiming the number one spot, overtaking the Hyundai Creta. Interestingly, the popular Tata Nexon missed out on the top five list in May 2025, while the Tata Punch, despite experiencing a 30% year-on-year sales decline, still managed to secure a position in the top five SUVs.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza —15,566 units
Maruti Suzuki’s compact SUV, the Brezza, stormed to take the first position in the SUV category. In May 2025, it clocked 15,556 units, which is almost a 10% hike year-on-year. In April, Brezza registered 16,971 units, a 1% dip as compared to April 2024. It is the best-selling vehicle in the sub-4-metre segment and the overall SUV class.Â
Hyundai Creta — 14,860 units
Both the internal combustion version and the all-electric model of the Creta managed to sell 14,860 units. The SUV saw a marginal 1.3% increase year-on-year. With Hyundai bouncing back from fourth place to third overtaking Tata Motors in total vehicle sales, the Creta has played an important role as it is the best-selling four-wheeler for the South Korean company.
Mahindra Scorpio — 14,401 units
With the Creta and Brezza swapping places, the Mahindra Scorpio retained its third position with 14,401 units. The top-selling Mahindra SUV saw a 5% hike year-on-year as it sold 13,717 units. In April 2025, the Scorpio clocked 15,534 units, which also saw a 5% jump. May was a good month for Mahindra and Mahindra as it continued to be the second most successful auto manufacturer. Â Â
Maruti Suzuki Fronx — 13,584 units
The Fronx is the second SUV which is in the top five after the table topper, the Brezza. The Fronx was the fifth best-selling SUV in April with 14,345 vehicles. By selling 13,584 units in May, the Maruti Suzuki SUV saw a 7% growth year-on-year.Â
Tata Punch — 13,133 units
In May, the Punch managed to clock 13,133 units, which helped it sneak into the top five list. Even though it saw a 31% drop in May, Punch narrowly beat the Tata Nexon by 31 units. In April, the Punch just missed the top 5 positions and saw a 35% drop year-on-year.
