August proved challenging for the leading automobile manufacturers, with Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai experiencing an 8 per cent decline, and Tata Motors a 3 per cent decrease year-on-year. However, compared to July 2024, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai registered growth of 4.1 per cent and 1 per cent, respectively, while Tata Motors faced a 1.3 per cent reduction. In August, Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza and Ertiga dominated the top spots, followed by the Creta in third place.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza leads the way
Three out of five top-selling vehicles in India are SUVs and the compact SUV, the Brezza, sold 19,190 units in August. The Maruti Suzuki SUV saw a massive growth of 32 per cent YoY. In month on month, the Brezza sold 4514 units more than in July 2024.
The most successful MPV, the Ertiga, split the two segment-leading SUVs, the Brezza and Creta, to take the second spot. The Ertiga skyrocketed to a 51 per cent growth as it registered 18,580 units in August 2024 as compared to August 2023’s 12,315 units.
The Creta is the best-selling midsize SUV and took the number one position in July 2024 with 17,350 units. In August, the Hyundai SUV witnessed 16,762 units which is a 21 per cent growth YoY.
The WagonR is the last hatchback standing in the top five. The Maruti Suzuki vehicle recorded 16,450 units and saw a 6 per cent YoY. The number one hatchback saw a dip in August as as it sold 17,350 units in July 2024.
The Punch has been seeing a downslide since July when it lost its crown to the Creta. The Tata sub-compact SUV sold 15,643 units, which is an eight per cent increase YoY. It is a different story as the Punch sold 16,191 units in July 2024.
