Tata Motors recently launched the facelifted Nexon EV, rechristened as Nexon.ev. The electric crossover has seen a significant revamp in design and some minor changes in specifications. It directly squares off against the Mahindra XUV400. Let us look at how both these subcompact electric SUVs fare against each other.

The facelifted Nexon EV measures 3,994mm in length, 1,811mm in width, and 1,616mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,498mm. In comparison, XUV400 measures 4,200mm in length, 1,821mm in width, and 1,634mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,600mm, making the latter bigger in every dimension. The XUV400 also rides higher at 200mm as compared to Nexon.ev which gets a ground clearance of 190mm.

The new Nexon.ev is brimming with features and outclasses its rival with functionalities such as all-LED lighting, automatic climate control, full-length light bars at front and rear, a fully-digital instrument console, a premium 9-speaker JBL audio system, a 360-degree parking camera, integrated voice assistant compatible with with Alexa, Google, and Siri; blind-spot view monitor, and  wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Further, Nexon.ev also boasts of a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system as compared to the 7-inch unit offered in XUV300. Common features include electric sunroof, connected car telematic, smartwatch connectivity, wireless phone charging, three drive modes, cruise control, and USB charging port.

In terms of safety, both electric SUVs offer features such as  six airbags, ESP, hill hold and ascent control, TPMS, an auto-dimming IRVM, ISOFIX mounts, follow-me-home headlamps, and a rearview camera. Nexon.ev also benefits from first-in-segment features of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-load charging capabilities.

Tata Nexon.ev is available in two derivatives– Medium-Range (MR) and Long-Range (LR). The former comes with a 30.2 kWh battery pack while the latter gets a 40.5 kWh battery. The 40.5 kWh battery pack can deliver 143 bhp of maximum power and a peak torque of 215 Nm, whereas the 30.2 kWh unit can produce peak output of 127 bhp and 215 Nm.

The vehicle comes equipped with a Gen2 permanent magnet synchronous motor that is lighter, cleaner, and more efficient. While the MR offers a range of 325 km on a single charge, the LR trims offer a peak range of 465 km on single charge. As for performance, the Nexon.ev can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 8.9 seconds and clock a top speed of 150 kmph.

On the other hand, XUV400 is also offered in two specs namely– EC and EL– equipped with 34.5kWh and 39.4kWh battery packs, respectively. While the former returns a range of 375 km, the latter offers a single-charge range of 456 km. Both trims come with the same motor which dishes out a peak output of 148 bhp and 310 Nm torque. As for performance, XUV400 achieves 0-100 kmph in 8.3 seconds, making it 0.6 seconds quicker than Nexon EV facelift.

Moreover, both Nexon EV facelift and XUV400 support 7.2 kW AC charging and 50 kW DC public charging. The Nexon.ev takes 56 minutes to get its batteries charged on using the 50kW DC charger, the XUV400 achives the same in 50 minutes

Nexon.ev is available in six variants including Creative Plus, Fearless, Fearless Plus, Fearless Plus S, Empowered, and Empowered Plus– each offered with two powertrain options. The Nexon.ev is priced between Rs 14.74 lakh to 19.94 lakh (ex-showroom).

XUV400, on the other hand, is available in three different trims: EC Standard, EC Fast, and EL (Long Range). The EC variants are priced at Rs Rs 15.99 lakh and Rs 16.49 lakh, whereas the EL variants are  Rs 19.19 lakh to Rs 19.39 lakh (all prices ex-showroom).
