People were surprised when Tata Motors decided not to launch a petrol engine option with the recently updated Harrier and Safari. In fact, the carmaker had even displayed its new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine earlier this year at Auto Expo 2023.
Tata Harrier, Safari petrol launch confirmed
However, Express Drives had then reported that Tata won’t be introduicnng a petrol engine option with the facelifted versions of both the mid-size SUVs at the time of launch. Now, the carmaker has confirmed the introduction of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol in the updated Harrier and Safari.
The new 1.5-litre turbocharged TGDi four-cylinder turbo petrol engine is capable of 168 bhp and 280 Nm of peak torque. While Tata Motors hasn’t confirmed a specific gearbox for the same, it is most likely to be paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and the brand’s new 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox.

Currently, both Harrier and Safari are solely powered by a 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine which kicks out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. This unit is paired with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. That said, Tata Motors hasn’t revealed a specific

In other developments, the new Harrier and Safari became the latest made-in-India cars to receive 5-star safety rating by Global NCAP. The mid-size SUV duos from Tata are the now safest cars available for sale in India with a 5-star rating each for adult safety as well as child safety. For adult safety, the SUVs scored 33.05 points out of 34 whereas the vehicles scored 45 out of 49 points in child safety.
