Tata Hexa has been applauded in India for its off-roading capabilities and now, Tata Motors is working a self-driving version of it – proof of which is that it was recently spotted testing on UK streets. Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC) is taking their collaboration with UK Autodrive and have started to test the autonomous Hexa in real-world conditions. UK Autodrive is an association that was set up a few years ago, bringing together automotive companies and the British Government to develop and test self-driving vehicles in the UK. The current project of testing on public roads is the first of its kind in the UK and involves the Hexa, new Ford Mondeo and Range Rover Sport. Tata Motors and Land Rover are also conducting independent tests. The test cars, however, have a trained driver inside at all times so as to handle the situation in case of an emergency.
The latest autonomous technology has been integrated into existing cars so as to confirm if the current production cars can be fitted with the modern tech. The tests are currently being held in the town of Coventry and will eventually also be carried out in Milton Keynes next year.
The autonomous Hexa will also have a new infotainment system with a large central screen which will display data collected by the sensors. Besides self-driving tech, the cars being tested by UK Autodrive are also being tested fro tech like Emergency Vehicle Warning (EVM), that detects signal from emergency vehicles such ambulances etc, Intersection Collision Warning (ICW) that senses if there’s another car approaching at an intersection and Intersection Priority Management (IPM) which will connect two or more connected cars to safely navigate through a traffic signal.
