Tesla Model Y has officially entered the Indian market, and while it takes on premium rivals, its electric specifications invite comparison with homegrown flagship EV SUVs like the Tata Harrier EV and Mahindra XEV 9e.

Tesla has finally made its debut in India. As expected, the Model Y electric SUV is priced in the luxury segment and starts from Rs 60 lakh, ex-showroom. Now, the usual suspects that the Model Y will go up against are the Mercedes-Benzes, Audis and BMWs in the world, but we pit the new kid on the block against the similarly specced Indian counterparts like the Mahindra XEV 9e and the Tata Harrier EV, which are less than half its price.

Tesla Model Y: Power, Range

The Model Y is available in two versions with 63 kWh and 83 kWh battery packs. The standard Rear-Wheel-Drive offers a range of 500 km WLTP and does 0 – 100 kmph in 5.9 seconds. The top version, the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.6 seconds and has a driving range of 622 km WLTP. By using a 250 kWh Supercharger, the Long Range offers a range of 267 km in just 15 minutes. Tesla has revealed that it will set up eight Superchargers — eight each in Mumbai and Delhi.

Tata Harrier EV: Specifications

The Harrier EV is available in two battery packs — a 65 kWh and a 75 kWh. The former is a rear-wheel-drive version with an output of 235 bhp and 315 Nm of torque. As per the MIDC Part 1 + Part 2 Cycle, the 65 kWh version returns a driving range of 538 km as per the MIDC Part 1 + Part 2 Cycle. It is packed with drive modes like Eco, City and Sport and terrain modes — Normal, Wet and Rough. With a 100 kW charger, the Harrier juices up from 20% to 80% in 25 minutes.

The rear-wheel-drive Harrier EV with a 75 kWh battery has the same output but has a range of 627 km. The higher variant of this spec gets an additional terrain mode — Custom. With a 120 kW charger, the Harrier goes from 20% to 80% in 25 minutes. The all-wheel-drive version is the only made-in-India EV that sports a twin-motor setup anda has an output of 390 bhp and 504 Nm. It does 0 – 100 kmph in 6.3 seconds.

The Harrier EV has received a 5-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP and is equipped with seven airbags, Level 2 ADAS and additional drive modes like Boost. It has six terrain modes — Normal, Snow/Grass, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl and Custom.

The flagship XUV 9e has been a runaway success, and along with the BE 6, the two Mahindra EVs have sold 10,000 units since the deliveries began in March. The XEV 9e has two battery options — the 59 kWh and 79 kWh. The entry-level trim churns out 228 bhp and 380 Nm and does 0 – 100 kmph in 6.8 seconds. It has a range of 542 km according to MIDC part 1 + part 2. The drivetrain of the XEV 9e is rear-wheel. With a 140 kW DC charger, it charges from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes.

The top model has an output of 282 bhp and 380 Nm of torque and accelerates from 0 – 100 kmph in 6.8 seconds. It has a driving range of 656 km. The XEV 9e has multiple drive modes like Default, Range, Everyday, Race and Snow.
