Tata Motors was having a tough time in the passenger vehicle (PV) segment for a very long time. Things started to change when the company entered the sub-4 SUV space with the launch of Nexon in 2017. The Nexon has been a consistent seller for Tata Motors. In fact, it has been the best-seller in its segment for a long period.
Post its initial launch, the Nexon has received two major updates, the first in February 2020 and the second in September 2023. However, the subcompact SUV is yet to receive a generation upgrade. We now have some updates regarding the second generation Tata Nexon.
Next-gen Tata Nexon: What’s project ‘Garud’?
According to an Autocar India report, Tata Motors has started developing the second-gen Nexon. Internally codenamed Garud, the new-gen Nexon is expected to make its debut in 2027. The report says that the upcoming Nexon will be underpinned by a heavily modified version of the X1 platform underpinning the current model.

For the uninitiated, the X1 architecture traces its roots back to the 1990s when it underpinned the Indica. Over the years, this platform has undergone several changes to accommodate the modern safety requirements. In the next-gen model too, the X1 platform will see major structural changes over the current iterations.
As of now, details about this project are scarce but we expect some significant cosmetic upgrades both externally and internally, in order to stay in sync with the current and upcoming range of Tata models. We also expect Tata Motors to add more features to the new Nexon including a Level 2 ADAS suite.
While the current range of petrol and CNG powertrains in Nexon are expected to be carried over, it is uncertain whether the diesel mill will make its way to the second-gen Nexon. Given the strict BS7 emission norms on cards in the next couple of years, diesel engines could become very costly in the future and hence it may not be viable to upgrade the diesel mill.

The Nexon’s 1.5-litre oil burner was the only diesel engine to meet the BS6 phase 2 emissions norms without the use of an expensive SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. In line with the combustion engine version, the Nexon EV may also receive a generation upgrade. However, it remains to be seen if Tata Motors introduces the new Nexon and Nexon EV simultaneously or separately.
