India’s number one car manufacturer signed off FY24-25 on a high note. Maruti Suzuki announced its highest total sales in its history with 22,34,266 units. In FY 23-24, the company registered 21,35,323 units. The cherry on top for Maruti Suzuki is that the WagonR retained its title for the best-selling vehicle for the fourth consecutive time since 2022.
The popular hatchback displaced Tata Punch from the top spot, despite the compact SUV’s dominance as the calendar year’s best-seller.
Maruti Suzuki: Win some, lose some
Apart from registering its highest sales in a financial year, Maruti Suzuki stepped on the accelerator and posted its best domestic and export market numbers, 17,95,259 and 332,585 units respectively.

Moving on to month-on-month figures, in March 2025, the domestic numbers were 1,60,016 units, a slight dip from March 2024’s 161,304 units. The reason behind this is that there was a decline in the sub-compact segment that includes entry-level hatchbacks like Alto and S-Presso and compact cars like WagonR, Baleno, Swift, Dzire, Celerio and Ignis.

Maruti Suzuki: Industry Expectation
Industry analysts and automakers anticipate a modest growth of 1-2% in FY25-26. Echoing this sentiment, Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer of Marketing & Sales at Maruti Suzuki, stated, “We are projecting similar growth trends, with FY25-26 expected to deliver 1-2% expansion.”
Banerjee further explained why the electric vehicle penetration in India is limited. He said there are three primary reasons for this. “First, an EV is not bought as a primary car and continues to be a secondary vehicle.” Range anxiety remains a concern. Consumers need electric vehicles that deliver substantial driving range that must be supported by robust charging infrastructure. Equally important is the need for reliable after-sales service, which plays a pivotal role in building long-term customer confidence in EV technology.
Maruti Suzuki has confirmed plans to implement a price increase across its entire vehicle lineup, though the exact date is yet to finalise. The price hike is expected to be in the region of 4% based on the car.
