The SUV body style has found millions of buyers in the last half a decade or so. As a result, there are now multiple segments and sub-segments of SUVs that are on sale in the country. For instance, there is now a segment of crossover SUVs slotted below the sub-4 metre SUVs– the likes of Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch.
SUVs now account for almost 50% of the total market share in the passenger vehicle market. Let us look at the top five SUVs sold in India for the month of January 2024.

Tata Punch
Tata Punch is the highest-selling SUV and the second highest-selling model overall in the passenger vehicle segment for January 2024. The subcompact crossover recorded a monthly sales volume of 17,978 units which led to a significant 50% YoY growth. Punch is available in both ICE (internal combustion engine) and fully-electric forms. The latter was launched recently last month.

Tata Nexon
Punch was followed by its elder sibling– Tata Nexon– which generated a sales volume of 17,182 units. This translated into a YoY growth of 10%. Like Punch, Nexon is also offered in both ICE and EV derivatives. The Nexon range received a major facelift in September 2023.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza
A direct rival to Nexon, Maruti Brezza is one of the highest-selling sub-4 metre SUVs in India which recorded a volume of 15,303 units last month. During January previous year, Maruti sold 14,359 units which has resulted in a YoY growth of 7%.

Mahindra Scorpio
Mahindra Scorpio is a surprise addition to this list. The mid-size SUV garnered a total sales volume of 14,293 units in January as opposed to 8,715 units sold during the same period the previous year. This led to a massive 64% YoY growth. Mahindra offers two derivatives of Scorpio namely Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N.

Maruti Fronx
Baleno-based Fronx has played an instrumental role in making Maruti Suzuki the number 1 SUV manufacturer in India. The crossover, which was launched in March 2023, recorded a monthly sales volume of 13,643 units in January this year.
