April 2025 marks the beginning of the financial year, and automotive manufacturers are looking to a good start. While Maruti Suzuki leads sales – has been for many many years – the battle for second place has been intense between Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra. All three manufacturers have a unique approach to the market — Hyundai with crossovers, Tata with mixed powertrains, and Mahindra with outright SUVs. However, in April 2025, Mahindra muscles out Tata and Hyundai.
April 2025 auto sales: Mahindra leads Tata, Hyundai
Mahindra has registered sales of 52,330 units in April 2025, beating Tata Motors and Hyundai. Tata, despite a YoY sales decline, has pipped Hyundai to take the third place, selling 45,199 units in the domestic market, followed by Hyundai in third, with 44,374 units sold in India.
Mahindra has seen a positive sales growth of 28 percent in the domestic market as compared to April 2024, when the SUV maker sold 41,008 units in the domestic market.
Tata’s domestic PV sales stood at 45,199 units in April 2025 as compared to 47,883 units sold in April 2024. Tata has witnessed a YoY domestic sales decline of 6 percent. Tata’s overall PV business, which includes its electric vehicle range and exports also saw a 16 percent YoY decline, registering sales of 5,318 units.
Trailing Mahindra and Tata comes Hyundai, which registered domestic sales of 44,374 units in April 2025. This is a decline of 11.6 percent for Hyundai as compared to domestic sales of 50,201 units in April 2024. Commenting on Hyundai’s April sales, Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer, Hyindai India said, “While the domestic market continues to face headwinds on account of various macro-economic factors, we continue to champion ‘Make in India, Made for the World’ emphasizing HMIL’s strong focus on exports.”
“This has resulted in a robust 21.5% YoY growth in export volumes in April 2025 and 16.2% growth during January to April 2025 as compared to same period in the previous year. Overall, we remain dedicated to enhancing value for our customers as we gear up to commence operations at our new plant at Talegaon in Q4 of this calendar year.”
