Domestic car and motorcycle sales rose sharply in June on rising demand and cheap credit availability. Tata Motors pipped Hyundai Motor India to become the country’s second largest car maker with the Mumbai-based auto major selling 27,811 units in June 2010 a tad higher than Hyundai’s 27,366 units.

Total sales of Tata Motors increased by more than 50% in June when compared to 17,039 units sold in June 2009. The company’s spokesperson Debasis Ray told FE, ?Indigo sales have been good and Safari?s have also shot up. These are all good signs and the company would look forward to maintain the lead,? he said.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor India registered a growth of 18.9% in June at 27,366 units as against 23,016 units during the corresponding period last year. However, due to contracting demand in the West, the company’s exports dipped 22.1% to 18,888 units as compared to 24,250 units in June 2009. The company’s director in sales and marketing Arvind Saxena said in a statement, ?The domestic market continues to show a steady growth, but the exports have slowed down especially in the EU countries in the absence of any fresh incentives from the respective governments there.?

The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki reported a domestic growth of 17.87% to 72,812 units in June 2010 as against 61,773 units in June 2009. During the period under review, the company’s exports increased 14.57% to 15,279 units from 13,336 units in the same month last year.

Riding high on the success of its newly launched car Beat, General Motors India sales surged more than 100% to 9,539 units in June 2010 as against 4,492 units in June 2009. ?The increase in the sales was primarily driven by the tremendous response to the recently launched and much sought after Chevrolet Beat and Chevrolet Cruze and the extremely popular Chevrolet Spark,? the company said in a statement.

Close behind its American rival, Ford India’s sales increased a whopping 267% to 7,269 units against 1,982 units on the back of the rising demand of its new small car Figo. The company said the same in a statement on Thursday, ?Success was driven mainly by the popularity of the Figo. We will continue to focus on our customers needs so that they will feel the Ford difference with our products and services.?

Toyota Kirloskar’s June sales surged 42% to 6,180 units against 4,367 units sold in June 2009. In the same month Honda Siel sold 4,595 units against 4,067 units in June 2009 an increase of 13%. SkodaAuto’s sales increased 43% to 1,638 units compared to 1,145 units last year.

The world’s largest motorcycle maker by volumes Hero Honda Motors sold 4,26,454 units in June 2010 compared to 3,65,734 units last year, with a growth of 16%. ?The 16% growth in June is very encouraging, coming as it does on the back of the high base of our sales last year. The growth is coming across all segments,? Anil Dua vice-president sales & marketing said.

Chennai based TVS Motors reported a growth of 35.7% in June 2010 at 1,56,685 units compared to 1,15,448 units last year. Motorcycle sales for the company in the same period rose 44.31% to 66,452 units as compared to 46,048 units last year. Yamaha Motors sold 28,155 units in June against 21,278 units last year with a growth of 32%.
