IPL Auction 2025 Day 2 LIVE UPDATES: Faf du Plessis: A Veteran Batsman in the Auction Spotlight
One of the key batters up for bidding in the first set of the day is Faf du Plessis, who captained Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the past few seasons. Earlier this year, he led St Lucia Kings to their maiden CPL 2024 title, finishing as their second-highest run-scorer. Despite being over 40 years old, du Plessis remains a standout player, currently topping the run charts in the Abu Dhabi T10. However, he remains uncertain about securing a spot for IPL 2025. The bidding for him will surely draw attention, with many wondering which team will add the experienced veteran to their roster.

IPL Auction 2025 Day 2 LIVE UPDATES: Vettori on Ishan
Ishan Kishan was a key acquisition for the team, and there was a strong desire to secure him. The team initially expected Kishan to go for a higher price, so they were extremely pleased with securing him along with the other key players.
Head coach Daniel Vettori confirmed that skipper Pat Cummins was involved in the decision-making process and agreed with all the picks. Vettori also mentioned that Cummins had a tough day with Australia trailing in the ongoing Test against India, but he had earlier expressed understanding of the team’s strategy. Cummins also provided input for the remaining squad building.
Head coach Mahela Jayawardene highlighted the significance of both retained players and auction purchases in the team-building process. He mentioned that the auction is not only about the available players and the purses but also about the value placed on retained players. He added that being in the top three for remaining purse heading into day two, along with having secured nine slots in their playing XI, gives the team confidence in executing their strategy.
The first day of the IPL 2025 mega auction has come to a close, with 72 players securing deals, and the rest of the slots set to be filled in tomorrow’s accelerated round. Here are the key highlights from day one:
Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer set new records with bids of INR 27 crore and INR 26.75 crore, respectively.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have the most purse remaining (INR 30.65 crore) and still hold on to their three Right to Match (RTM) cards.
Mumbai Indians (MI) made the least purchases, adding just four players to their roster, with Trent Boult being their only overseas acquisition so far.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) strengthened their spin attack by bringing back R Ashwin and Noor Ahmad.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) had the largest purse at the start and splurged heavily, securing Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Glenn Maxwell, and several others.
Venkatesh Iyer was one of the surprise picks of the day, fetching a massive INR 23.75 crore deal with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Gujarat Titans made some quality buys, picking up Jos Buttler, Suraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Prasidh Krishna.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) strengthened their squad with key acquisitions, including Avesh Khan, Mitchell Marsh, David Miller, Aiden Markram, and Rishabh Pant.
Rajasthan Royals (RR) went big for Jofra Archer, while Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) spent heavily on wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan.
Punjab Kings came into the IPL Auction 2025 with the largest purse of INR 110.5 crore and were quick to make the most of it, acquiring ten players on day one. Among their notable buys, the team secured a likely captain in Shreyas Iyer, brought back Arshdeep Singh, and strengthened their spin department with Yuzvendra Chahal. They also added Australian allrounders Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell to their squad.
What PBKS Needs on Monday: The team will focus on securing opening options and bolstering their fast-bowling lineup, particularly with overseas options to complement their squad.
IPL Auction 2025 Day 2 LIVE UPDATES: Kolkata Knight Riders Strengthen Squad
On Sunday, Kolkata Knight Riders made strategic moves in the IPL Auction 2025, bringing back four players from their title-winning squad after retaining six. However, they had to splurge INR 23.75 crore to secure Venkatesh Iyer. With most of their first XI already in place, KKR is in a strong position.
What KKR Needs on Monday: The team is now focusing on adding a middle-order batter for their first XI and securing backups for other key slots in the squad.
In a dramatic turn of events, Rishabh Pant justified the pre-auction hype by emerging as the most expensive player in the IPL Auction 2025, fetching a massive Rs 27 crore. However, his acquisition was far from straightforward, with the auctioneer nearly closing the deal at least three times. At one point, Pant was shockingly bid at Rs 11.75 crore, only for a last-minute raise to keep the bidding alive.
The suspense was palpable, with the contingent of team owners and coaches, including LSG mentor Zaheer Khan, engaged in intense discussions. Khan was so engrossed in the drama that he emptied several water bottles during the process. Pant’s allure proved irresistible, securing his place as one of the most coveted players in the auction.
IPL Auction 2025 Day 2 LIVE UPDATES: Fleming on Ashwin
Chennai Super Kings‘ coach, Stephen Fleming, spoke about the strategic addition of Ravichandran Ashwin to the squad, calling it a “homecoming” for the world-class bowler. While the price tag was not the primary consideration, Fleming emphasized how Ashwin’s emotional connection with Chennai made him a perfect fit for the team. Despite being in the later stages of his career, Ashwin’s exceptional skillset and impressive statistics remain a significant asset, and his ability with the bat adds further value.
Fleming believes Ashwin will be used in a variety of roles within the team.
On the acquisition of Noor Ahmad, Fleming explained that the decision was based on the need for a bowler who could target the middle overs, particularly in turning conditions. With Ahmad’s potential to take wickets in the middle overs and Matheesha Pathirana handling the death overs, the team aims to attack more effectively.
Fleming noted the importance of adapting bowling strategies to the evolving nature of the game. He emphasized the need for bowlers to take wickets, rather than merely containing the opposition, as aggressive hitters today can quickly change the course of a match. By adding variation to their attack, including the retention of key players and strategic acquisitions, Chennai hopes to avoid the weaknesses that hindered their performance in the previous season.
IPL Auction 2025 Day 2 LIVE UPDATES: Ricky Ponting on Shreyas Iyer
Ricky Ponting, the head coach of Punjab Kings, expressed confidence in Shreyas Iyer‘s leadership abilities, noting that he would be an excellent leader for the team if they decide to go in that direction, which Ponting believes is highly likely. He mentioned that he had worked with Shreyas in the past and praised him as both a great individual and a talented player. Ponting also highlighted Iyer’s successful track record as a championship-winning captain, which adds significant value to bringing him to Punjab.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) made six acquisitions but still have only nine players in their squad. The franchise spent heavily on Phil Salt, Jitesh Sharma, Josh Hazlewood, and Rasikh Dar.
What they need today
RCB is in need of middle-order batters, a back-up opener, and additional fast-bowling and spin support.
IPL Auction 2025 Day 2 LIVE UPDATES: What CSK needs?
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made strong moves in the IPL 2025 auction, bringing back Devon Conway and Ravindra Jadeja, two key pillars of their squad. They also strengthened their spin attack with the additions of veteran Ravichandran Ashwin and the promising Noor Ahmad.
What They Need to do today
Looking ahead to the next day of the auction, CSK is focused on bolstering their pace attack and adding depth to their middle-order batting lineup.
IPL Auction 2025 Day 2 LIVE UPDATES: What Mumbai Indians need?
On Sunday, Mumbai Indians made only four acquisitions, bringing their total squad strength to just nine, the smallest among all teams, alongside Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Currently, the squad includes only one overseas player, Trent Boult.
What They Need on Monday: Key Additions for a Balanced SquadLooking ahead to Monday’s auction, Mumbai Indians are in need of an opening partner for Rohit Sharma, an additional wicketkeeper, more depth in the lower-middle order, and a couple more fast bowlers and spinners to complete their squad.
