Wipro share price is down nearly 6% intra-day. However, investors should not be very worried. The IT major is trading adjusted for its Rs 15,000 crore share buyback, making June 5 an important date for shareholders tracking the stock.

Investors must remember this is not a sell-off triggered by weak earnings, a business setback, or a brokerage downgrade. Instead, the decline was linked to a corporate action – the buyback.

Let’s take a look at the key factors investors need to watch out of this technology sector stock

Why did the share price of Wipro fall today?

The key reason behind today’s decline is the buyback record date. Wipro had fixed June 5, 2026, as the record date to determine which shareholders are eligible to participate in the company’s share repurchase programme.

As a result, the stock turned ex-buyback on Friday. Investors who purchased shares on or after June 5 will not be eligible for the buyback entitlement.

What is Wipro’s buyback plan?

Back in April, Wipro’s board approved its largest-ever share buyback worth Rs 15,000 crore.

Under this proposal, this IT sector company plans to repurchase up to 60 crore equity shares at a fixed price of Rs 250 per share.

The buyback size represents nearly 5.7% of Wipro’s paid-up equity capital. In May, the shareholders approved the proposal and the company subsequently announced June 5 as the record date.

Why was June 4 the last day to buy shares?

Indian stock markets follow a T+1 settlement cycle. This means that shares are credited to an investor’s demat account one business day after purchase.

Since June 5 was the record date, investors needed to buy Wipro shares by June 4 to ensure that the shares were credited to their demat accounts in time. Those purchasing the stock on June 5 or later will not qualify for the buyback entitlement linked to the record date.

A look at Wipro’s buyback history

This is Wipro’s first buyback since 2023. In its previous repurchase programme, the company bought back nearly 27 crore shares for around Rs 12,000 crore at a price of Rs 445 per share.

The current buyback, at Rs 15,000 crore, is larger in size and represents one of the biggest capital return exercises undertaken by the company.

The company has not yet announced the opening and closing dates for the tendering process, which investors will continue to watch closely in the coming weeks.
