A major 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Tohoku region in Japan, with a depth of 10 km and epicentre on the Sanriku Coast. Tsunami warnings were issued for the northeast, with waves up to 3 metres expected to hit coastal areas. People were urged to evacuate and move to higher ground immediately.
