Why is there controversy over Waqf Amendment Bill 2025?
One of the most debated parts of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is the idea of allowing a non-Muslim to become the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Waqf board. The Bill also proposes that at least two non-Muslims be appointed by state governments to join their state’s Waqf board. It would also give the District Collector the power to decide whether a disputed property belongs to the Waqf or the government.
Other controversial parts of the Bill include removing the idea of “Waqf by user,” which allows properties to be considered Waqf based on how they are used. The Bill also requires that all Waqf properties be registered in a central database within six months after the law starts. Additionally, it removes the rule that made the Waqf tribunal’s decisions final and unchangeable.
