New Parliament Building inauguration, Parliament House opening ceremony Live news: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that the new Parliament House is a reflection of the dreams and aspirations of a New India and said the new building will witness the rise of a self-reliant India. He was delivering his maiden address in the new Parliament during the second leg of the opening ceremony of the new Parliament building. The second leg of the ceremony began with the National Anthem in Lok Sabha. This was followed by speeches by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, who also read out messages from President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Two short films were also screened, and a commemorative Rs 75 coin and a stamp were also released by the Prime Minister.

The event also saw the PM and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Prakash Birla attend a puja and havan in the Parliament premises, PM paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, the installation of the ‘Sengol’ near the Speaker’s chair in Lok Sabha and a multi-faith prayer meeting attended by the PM and several other dignitaries and religious leaders.

Several years of foreign rule stole our pride from us, the Prime Minister said on Sunday. “Today, India has left behind that colonial mindset,” he said addressing the gathering in the new Parliament.

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh addressed the gathering at the inauguration of the new Parliament building and said that the day will prove an important milestone as it will prove to be a source of inspiration in the Amritkaal. “It is a matter of immense happiness that a new modern Parliament was constructed in less than 2.5 years under the leadership of PM Modi,” he said.

Protesting wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia are among several people detained for an attempt to take out a march towards Parliament where the inaugural event of the new Parliament House is underway. Delhi Police said there was no permission to undertake the march and Section 144 is in place in view of the inaugural ceremony.

The second leg of the inauguration of the new Parliament will begin at 12 noon. The National Anthem will be followed by speeches by dignitaries, the release of a new Rs 75 coin and a stamp. It is scheduled to conclude at 2 PM.
AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi said that it would have been more appropriate if Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the new Parliament House. He also took a jibe at the RJD and said the ruling party in Bihar has no business calling the Parliament a coffin. “RJD has no stand, the old Parliament building did not even have clearance from Delhi Fire Service. Why are they (RJD) calling the Parliament a coffin? They could have said anything else, why do they need to bring this angle?” Owaisi wondered.
Union minister Pralhad Joshi on SUnday said that the Congress party can't tolerate good things happening in the country and claimed that the party is lying about Sengol. He also took a shot at the RJD for defaming the Parliament. “Parliament is a temple of democracy, people will give them a befitting reply for the way they (RJD) are using expletives for the new Parliament,” he said, referring to the RJD's tweet today comparing the new Parliament building to a coffin.

“Mahapanchayat will certainly be held today. We're fighting for our self-respect. They're inaugurating the new Parliament building today, but murdering democracy in the country. We appeal to the administration to release our people detained by police,” wrestler Bajrang Punia said today. The protesting wrestlers have planned a Mahila Mahapanchayat at Jantar Mantar and a protest march demanding action against WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The Delhi Police has denied permission for any gathering in view of the Parliament inauguration.

To open a new Parliament building without the Opposition makes it an incomplete event, NCP MP Supriya Sule said on SUnday. “It means there is no democracy in the country.”
Union minister Arjun Munda said Sunday that the Opposition parties, who boycotted the inauguration of the new Parliament building by PM Modi, should “not do politics” and take part to “strengthen democracy”.

All entry and exit gates of Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan metro stations have been closed for passenger movement. Interchange facilities are available at Central Secretariat, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said in a statement.

Spread over an area of 65,000 sq metres, the new Parliament building can accommodate 888 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 300 in the Rajya Sabha. Unlike the old Parliament House, the new one will have no Central Hall and joint sessions will be held in the Lok Sabha. A blend of state-of-the-art technology and Indian tradition, the construction of the new Parliament building began on December 10, 2020, and has been completed ahead of schedule.
