BJP candidate Kangana Ranaut on Tuesday defeated Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh by a margin of over 74,000 votes. 5,37,022 votes were polled in favour of Kangana Ranaut while Vikramaditya Singh received 4,62,267 votes, according to the ECI data.

As Kangana Ranaut marches towards victory, she thanked the voters of Mandi and said “This is the victory of Sanatan, this is the victory in Mandi’s honour”.

Taking to social media platform, Instagram, Kangana Ranaut said, “Heartfelt gratitude to all the people of Mandi for this love and trust. This victory belongs to all of you, this is the victory of trusting Prime Minister Modi and BJP, this is the victory of Sanatan.”

BJP candidate from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut has gained a comfortable lead and is likely to win the seat. As first-time contender Ranaut inches ahead, she is ranking on top of the trends on X (formerly Twitter).

Himachal Pradesh is home to four Lok Sabha constituencies – Mandi, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Shimla. The Bharatiya Janata Party is poised to see a clean sweep in the hill state.

The Mandi Lok Sabha seat was won by Bharatiya Janata Party’s Ram Swaroop Sharma in 2014 and 2019, with a vote share of 49.97 per cent and 68.75 per cent respectively.

However, Sharma’s demise on March 17, 2021 necessitated the byelection and Pratibha Singh, Vikramaditya Singh’s mother, won the seat on a Congress ticket in that November.

Ranaut, no stranger to controversy, is going up against Congress’ Vikramaditya Singh, the son of former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. Singh has contested two assembly elections in the past but this is his first bid for a parliamentary seat.

As India voted to elect its 543-member Parliament and now gears up to find out who will form the next government, the Election Commission of India (ECI) began counting votes at 8 am on Tuesday morning. Initially, the postal ballots will be counted and then the counting of EVM votes will begin.

After Rajasthan’s Barmer, Mandi is the second-largest parliamentary constituency in India, which covers six districts of Mandi, Chamba, Shimla, Lahaul & Spiti, Kinnaur and Kullu.

This includes the upper areas of Manali, Kullu, Rampur, Lahaul & Spiti, Kinnaur and Bharmour, as well as the lower regions of Mandi, Sungernagar, Nachan, Anni, Karsog, Banjar, Seraj, Darang, Jogindernagar, Balh and Sarkaghat.

In 2019, BJP candidate Ram Swaroop Sharma emerged victorious in Mandi. However, after Swaroop’s death in 2021, Pratibha Singh took charge of this area by winning the bypoll, Vikramaditya Singh’s mother.

The seat of Mandi, nestled in the heart of the hill state of Himachal, has mostly been dominated by the Congress and has been the karmabhoomi of late Virbhadra Singh, who was elected the Chief Minister of the state six times and was Vikramaditya Singh’s father. Virbhadra Singh was an MP from Mandi thrice. In the 19 elections held here, Congress party MPs have been elected 13 times.

During the election campaign, Kangana launched a multi-pronged attack on her opponents and made several controversial statements about rival Vikramaditya Singh. Kangana’s statement calling Vikramaditya Singh ‘Chota Pappu’ and ‘Raja Beta’ in Manali made headlines. Kangana also used words like ‘shehzada’, ‘satta ke bhuke’, corrupt, anti-women against him and attracted legal tussles for herself as the Congress took the matter to the election commission.

The mega clash between BJP‘s pick, Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, and Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh was easily one of the most high-profile contests in the state. Be it Kangana’s ‘beef eating’ past which the actor denied to Vikramaditya being called ‘chota pappu’, the tone was set for an ugly fight between royalty and stardom right from the nomination days.

While Kangana is vying for her first victory and is expecting to benefit from Brahmin and Rajput votes, Vikramaditya based him campaign on election promises.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) will begin the counting of votes at 8 am. The counting of postal ballots will begin first which will be followed by the counting of EVM votes. The outcome will become clear once the results for all constituencies are declared by the poll panel.
