In the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance surged to power, propelled by the national popularity of Narendra Modi. The BJP won 122 seats, while the Shiv Sena secured 66. 44-year-old Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as Chief Minister.
However, by the end of his term, tensions between the allies began to surface. While both parties shared a Hindutva ideology, the BJP’s national ambitions increasingly made the Shiv Sena feel sidelined. Despite their growing differences, the two parties secured enough seats in the 2019 elections to form a government—BJP winning 105 and Shiv Sena 56 seats.
However, their internal rift became a stumbling block. When the Shiv Sena refused to cooperate, Ajit Pawar, the nephew of NCP leader Sharad Pawar, briefly pledged support to Fadnavis. Fadnavis was sworn in hastily, but Ajit Pawar withdrew his support, leading to Fadnavis’ resignation just five days later.
Following this, a new coalition, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), was formed with Shiv Sena, Congress, and NCP. Uddhav Thackeray became Chief Minister, and Ajit Pawar was appointed Deputy Chief Minister. This government also collapsed when Eknath Shinde, a senior Shiv Sena leader, rebelled and allied with the BJP, eventually becoming Chief Minister. Fadnavis was sworn in as his deputy, and Ajit Pawar broke the NCP, becoming Deputy Chief Minister once more. Till date, this alliance, called the Mahayuti, continues.
