Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Highlights: Narendra Modi on Wednesday resigned as the Prime Minister of India and is likely to take oath for a third consecutive term on June 8. The new Cabinet of Modi 3.0 is also likely to take oath on the same day. Modi met President Droupadi Murmu earlier in the day to tender his resignation and is set to meet her again with letters of support from NDA parties to stake claim to form the government. The developments come a day after the National Democratic Alliance emerged on top in the Lok Sabha elections, winning 293 of the 543 seats. The Opposition alliance of 28 parties under the INDIA banner collectively managed 232 seats, 40 short of the majority mark.

According to EC data, the Bharatiya Janata Party is ahead in 244 seats including leads and wins which is around 30 seats short of the 272 mark required for a majority in the 543-member House. In 2014 and 2019, the BJP bagged a majority on its own while the NDA partners added to the tally.

The NDA’s tally is seen consolidating just short of the 300 mark while the Congress is currently close to the 100-mark. The BJP‘s fall in tally is majorly pushed by its lackluster performance in UP against the Samajwadi Party. In the 56 seats where the BJP and SP were in a direct face-off, the BJP is leading in 25 seats while the SP is ahead in 31.
The Congress party has made a strong comeback in the Lok Sabha election results and is on track to almost double its tally from 52 in 2019. As per the ECI, the Congress is currently ahead in 94 seats.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is trailing from the Thiruvananthapuram constituency against BJP‘s Rajeev Chandrasekhar. As per the Election Commission of India, Chandrasekhar is leading against Tharoor by a margin of over 12,000 votes.
The INDIA bloc of Opposition parties has crossed the 200-mark in EC trends while the NDA’s tally is seen consolidating around 295 seats. As of 11.30 AM, the NDA is ahead in 297 seats, the INDIA bloc at 227 while Others are at 19 seats.
Jyoti Prakash Gadia, Managing Director at Resurgent India, said, “As the trends are emerging, the landslide victory as predicted by the exit polls does not seem to be happening.This is likely to make the government to have second thoughts on the difficult economic reforms and the same may not be as aggressive as earlier anticipated. However, the emphasis may shift partly to ground level welfare schemes and employment generation. Overall growth trajectory may however remain stable with emphasis on infrastructure development which may emerge as a consensus strategy in the long run.”
The BSE Sensex crashed by over 4,000 points as markets saw a bloodbath following the election results that showed the BJP barely crossing the majority mark of 272 seats. As per available trends, the NDA is leading in 291 seats and the INDIA bloc is ahead in 231 seats.
BJP is set to fall short of a majority on its own with the ECI trends showing the party ahead in 238 of the 543 seats. In the past two elections, the BJP has won a majority of 272 seats on its own.
Prominent BJP faces such as Smriti Irani and K Annamalai are trailing from their respective seats in the Lok Sabha. Irani is trailing in Amethi while Annamalai is behind in Coimbatore. Exit polls had predicted a clear win for both candidates.
JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy is leading by a margin of over 1 lakh votes from the Mandya constituency in Karnataka. Kumaraswamy is up against Venkataramane Gowda (Star Chandru) of the Congress.
The results and trends so far suggest that the NDA leading in 292 seats against 223 seats for the Opposition INDIA bloc. The exit polls had predicted over 350 seats for the NDA.
