Latest News Today Highlights, July 11, 2024: Delhi Lt Governor directs agencies to urgently carry out desilting of drains

Delhi LG VK Saxena chaired a Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) meeting on Thursday to assess flood control readiness among all relevant agencies. He directed immediate desilting of drains and removal of encroachments, following recent heavy waterlogging incidents across the national capital. Delhi Water Minister Atishi also attended the meeting. During the session, the LG reviewed the flooding caused by a breach in the Munak Canal in North West Delhi, particularly in the Bawana area. The CEO of DJB, present at the meeting, reported that repairs were underway urgently and expected to conclude by Friday evening.

The Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, has recommended to the Centre the elevation of high court judges N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan to the apex court. Justice Singh serves as Chief Justice of the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while Justice Mahadevan is the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

Amid an acute financial crisis, the Left government in Kerala announced on Thursday its decision to reduce unnecessary spending and prioritize specific areas in the current fiscal year’s budget. The Chief Minister’s Office stated that the state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, has formed a ministerial sub-committee comprising key department ministers. Their task is to adjust the budget allocation for the 2024-25 fiscal year, responding to economic challenges attributed to central policies.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has been hospitalized at AIIMS in New Delhi, where officials confirm his stable condition. The reason for his admission remains undisclosed, pending further updates.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 37 development projects worth Rs 269 crores in Gurugram on Thursday, according to an official statement.

The projects include the inauguration of 12 projects valued at Rs 13.76 crores and the foundation stone laying for 25 projects worth Rs 255.17 crores. The ceremony took place during the Mukhyamantri Shaheri Svamitva Yojana’s registration and distribution of ‘Svamitva Patra’ at Manesar.

In a significant breakthrough in the NEET-UG paper leak case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Rockey alias Rakesh Ranjan, a key suspect who had been evading authorities since the investigation into irregularities in the entrance exam commenced. 

Officials reported that Rockey, believed to be a close relative of mastermind Sanjeev Mukhia and hailing from Nalanda, was captured on the outskirts of Patna.

In a concerted effort to maintain commuter safety and uphold regulations, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has taken strict action against male passengers found entering coaches designated for women. According to official data, DMRC has issued penalties to 1,906 male passengers between January and June this year for violating these norms.

Each offender is fined Rs 250 for entering women-only coaches, with the highest number of penalties issued in May at 443, followed by 419 in April and 408 in February. The DMRC’s Principal Executive Director, Anuj Dayal, emphasized the regular enforcement of penalties and various awareness campaigns aimed at educating passengers on respecting designated coach norms.

TCS reported a net workforce of 606,998 employees at the end of QFY25. For just Q1, the company has hired 5,452 employees and nearly 35.5% of the workforce comprised of women. The company also said that the attrition rates have gone down and is now at 12%.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu held a high-level meeting on Thursday to evaluate the significant damage caused by landslides and floods triggered by heavy rains in the state. The natural disasters have severely disrupted surface communication to several districts. During the meeting, Chief Secretary Dharmendra was also present, emphasizing the urgent need to restore road connectivity, especially in the districts affected by flooding.

The tech services giant reported a net profit of Rs 12,105 crore in Q1 of FY25 against Rs 11,120 crore it reported in the same period a year ago, a growth of 8.85% on year. TCS‘ revenue from operations stood at Rs 62,613 crore in Q1 of FY25, compared to Rs 59,381 crore it posted in the corresponding period last fiscal. The company’s revenue grew 5.4% on year in Q1 of FY25.

A Saudi Airlines plane caught fire while landing at Peshawar Airport in Pakistan on Thursday. Local reports indicate that up to 10 passengers were injured. Fortunately, there are no reports of fatalities, and everyone has been safely evacuated. The fire reportedly started in the landing gear during the landing. Mihir Shah, the main accused in Mumbai’s hit-and-run case had consumed alcohol in excess on the day of BMW crash which killed a woman, aged 45. The ANI report quoted Mumbai Police sources saying that the discovery was made during the investigation. Shah had reportedly consumed alcohol at two different places that day.

The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will contest the upcoming Haryana elections together, Abhay Singh Chautala, Secretary General of the INLD, announced on Thursday. “In Haryana, we have decided to jointly fight the upcoming assembly elections. The general sentiment among the people is to oust the BJP from power and to keep the Congress party, which misgoverned the state for ten years, at bay,” Chautala said at a press conference.

According to PropTiger, housing sales in the top eight cities dropped by 6% during the April-June period compared to the preceding quarter, attributed to caution among builders and investors ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. The property brokerage platform, a part of REA India which owns Housing.com, released its quarterly data on housing demand and supply on Thursday. The data reveals a decline in housing sales to 113,768 units from 120,642 units in the January-March quarter. However, there was a notable increase of 42% in housing sales from 80,245 units recorded during the same period last year.

The Supreme Court will hear petitions challenging alleged paper leaks and irregularities in the National Eligibility Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 on July 11, as the government submitted an affidavit opposing a re-test, citing a report from IIT Madras that refutes claims of widespread malpractices or cheating at select centers. “There is neither any indication of mass malpractice nor a localised set of candidates being benefited leading to abnormal scores,” the report provided by the experts’ team from IIT Madras, which has been attached to the Centre’s affidavit, stated.
