Fire breaks out in Mumbai chawl, two injured

Two persons were injured when a fire broke out in Mumbai’s Kherwadi Bandra East chawl due to gas leakage, reports said. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), incident occured in the evening and the fire has been doused. “Fire started in chawl due to gas leakage. Two persons were injured and have been sent to a private hospital,” an official said. Further details are awaited.

Reliance Industries Limited contributes Rs 25 cr to Uttarakhand CM’s relief fund

Reliance Industries Limited has contributed an amount of Rs 25 crore to the Uttarakhand Chief Minister’s Relief Fund in view of the destruction caused by heavy rainfall, floods and landslides in the state. On behalf of Reliance Industries Limited Director Anant Ambani, Reliance Industries Limited Executive Assistant Tanay Dwivedi and Chief Minister’s Advisor Shri BD Singh handed over the amount for the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Indian defence exports reach Rs 16,000 crore mark

Looking to expand the Make in India in defence sector, India’s defence exports have skyrocketed to an all-time high, touching nearly the Rs 16,000 cr mark in FY 2022-23, reports said. With a 23-fold increase in exports, Indian design and development capabilities are reaching over 85 countries, the Defence Ministry announced.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has announced the development of an industrial area spanning 100 acres of land under the PADMA scheme in Khanpur village, Hisar. This initiative aims to stimulate micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) units in Khanpur and its neighbouring villages, thereby creating employment opportunities. Under this scheme, the Khanpur village Panchayat will propose to allocate 100 acres of land, reports said.

An Emirates flight from Dubai to Guangzhou was diverted to Delhi on Friday due to a medical emergency, according to a source. Specific details could not be immediately ascertained. Renowned director-actor G Marimuthu passed away on Friday due to cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Chennai. He died of cardiac arrest today around 8:30 am at a private hospital in the city. Marimuthu collapsed while dubbing his voice for a television serial. Then, he was rushed o a private hospital in Vadapalani, where he was declared dead.

Himachal Pradesh: Kinnaur district cut off from Shimla following major landslide

Kinnaur district has been cut off from Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, following a major landslide at Negulsari on National Highway 5 on Thursday night, officials said. However, no casualty was reported as vehicular traffic was stopped on the road late on Thursday evening. A stretch of about 150-300 metre of the NH has been badly damaged, K L Suman, executive engineer, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), said, adding that it is not even possible to cross the stretch on foot. A large number of vehicles, including apple-laden trucks coming from Kinnaur, are stranded on the road. The apple growers are worried as their produce will rot if the road is not opened soon. (PTI)

India is studying possible responses to a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan following discreet inquiries from the US on how the South Asian nation could contribute in the event of a war, according to senior Indian government officials. About six weeks ago, Defense Chief General Anil Chauhan — India’s top military commander — commissioned a study to examine the wider impact of any war over the island that also involves the US and its allies, and what action India could take in response, according to two senior Indian officials, who asked not to be named since discussions are private. The order came after the US raised the issue in several different forums, they said. (Bloomberg)

Man held for flight attendant’s murder found hanging in Mumbai police’s custody

A 40-year-old man, who was arrested for allegedly killing flight attendant Rupal Ogrey, was found hanging in the Mumbai police’s custody in the early hours of Friday, an official said. The accused, Vikram Athwal, was found hanging using a pair of pants as a noose inside the toilet of Andheri police station, he said. It is a suspected case of suicide, the police official added. Hong Kong receives record rains since 1884

Hong Kong on Friday closed schools and halted trading on the stock exchange as torrential rain lashed the city overnight, flooding streets in parts of the city as well as an underground subway station. Heavy rains poured down on the city from Thursday night, with the government warning that the weather would last till noon Friday. The Hong Kong Observatory said it recorded 158.1 mm (6.2 inches) of rain in the hour between 11 pm on Thursday and midnight, the highest recording since records began in 1884. (AP)

Ten workers killed in gas accident in China’s Inner Mongolia region

Ten people were killed and three others were injured in a gas accident at a workshop in Ordos in China’s northern Inner Mongolia region, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) said on Friday, citing local authorities. A burst of high-pressure gas on Thursday afternoon killed 8 workers at the shop owned by Ordos Yiding Eco-Agriculture Development, CCTV reported. (Reuters)

The counting of votes for the seven assembly seats across six states that went to bypoll on last Tuesday is underway. The byelections verdict is perceived as the first round of battle between the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc vs BJP-led NDA ahead of the crucial Assembly polls in five states, which are likely to be announced sometime later this year.
