CCI approves the merger of Vistara into Air India
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved merger of Tata SIA Airlines into Air India, and acquisition of certain shareholding by Singapore Airlines in Air India subject to compliance of voluntary commitments offered by the parties. The proposed combination envisages
- The merger of Tata SIA Airlines Limited (TSAL/Vistara) into Air India Limited (AIL/Air India), with AIL being the surviving entity (Merged Entity).
- In consideration of the merger, the acquisition of shares in the Merged Entity by Singapore Airlines Limited (SIA) and Tata Sons Private Limited (TSPL).
- Acquisition of additional shares in the Merged Entity by SIA pursuant to a preferential allotment
NHRC issues notice to MP govt over ‘death’ of 5 workers while cleaning tank at factory in Morena
The NHRC has sent a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government over reports that five workers died allegedly after inhaling poisonous gas while cleaning a tank at a factory in Morena district, reports said. Apparently, the workers were unaware of the presence of toxic gases in the tank and were not equipped with the safety gear.
Delhi HC seeks NTA stand on plea to hold CLAT in English, regional languages
The Delhi High Court has sought the stand of the National Testing Agency (NTA) on a petition seeking conduct of Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)-2024 not only in English but also regional languages. A bench headed by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma asked NTA, which conducts competitive examinations like NEET and JEE, to file a response stating if questions asked in CLAT can be translated into other languages.

CPI MP Binoy Viswam has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising concerns over the naming of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janurvarak Pariyojna (PM-BJP), and questioned the ‘one nation, one fertiliser’ scheme for using the PM-BJP branding and printing PM’s photograph on fertiliser. In a letter, Viswam said farmers deserve clarity, choice, and transparency in choosing fertilisers.
Reliance Retail in talks to raise $2.5 billion: Report
Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Retail Ventures is in advanced talks with global investors to raise around $2.5 billion by the end of September, ahead of a potential stock market listing, people familiar with the matter told Reuters. Three sources said the target fund raise of $2.5 billion is part of a combined $3.5 billion target the firm has set for itself, a part of which – $1 billion – came from Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and was announced last month. In an emailed statement, Reliance said “As a policy, we do not comment on media speculation and rumours.”, but added “Our company evaluates various opportunities on an ongoing basis.” (Reuters)
Air India onboarded 650 pilots since April this year, says CEO
Air India group airlines have recruited and onboarded as many as 650 pilots since April this year, according to Air India CEO Campbell Wilson. Besides, Air India’s widebody Boeing 777 fleet will have two more B777s by the first week of this month, with one of them already added to the fleet, which will help the airline enhance services to the US and upgauge capacity, he said. Malayalam actor Aparna Nair found dead
Malayalam cine-serial actor Aparna Nair was found hanging at her residence in Thiruvananthapuram, police confirmed on Friday. The 33-year old actor, who has acted in a few movies and numerous serials, was found hanging inside her room at her residence near Karamana here last night, police said. Ex-President Kovind-headed committee to explore possibility of ‘one-nation, one-election’
The government has constituted a committee headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind to explore the possibility of “one nation, one election”, sources said on Friday. The move comes a day after the government called a special session of Parliament between September 18 and 22, the agenda for which is under wraps. Over the years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pushed strongly for the idea of simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly polls, and the decision to task Kovind to look into it underscores the government’s seriousness as a host of elections approach.
