Maharashtra Election Polling 2024 Highlights: Voting for the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly started at 7 am on Wednesday amid tight security and is expected to conclude by 5 pm. This electoral cycle, Maharashtra is witnessing a fierce two-pronged battle between the ruling Mahayuti — an alliance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena — and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which comprises the Congress, Sharad Pawar’s faction of the NCP, and Uddhav Thackeray’s camp of the Shiv Sena.
While the Mahayuti is aiming to retain power, the MVA is seeking a strong comeback. In Mahayuti, the BJP is contesting in 149 seats, Shiv Sena is in the fray in 81 seats, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP has fielded candidates in 59 constituencies. Meanwhile, in the MVA, the Congress has fielded 101 candidates, Shiv Sena (UBT) 95, and NCP (SP) has put up 86 candidates. This year, a total of 4,136 candidates are in the fray. Among these candidates, 2,086 are independents. Meanwhile, a total of 1,00,186 polling booths have been set up in Maharashtra this time, compared to 96,654 booths in the 2019 assembly elections. This increase is due to the rise in the number of voters.
