Indian Railways has decided to equip all its passenger coaches with CCTV cameras to improve safety for the passengers. The Railways Ministry has given a green light to install CCTV cameras in 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locos.

The Railways Ministry said that every train coach will be equipped with 4 CCTV cameras, and each locomotive will have six CCTV cameras. The Railways said talong alongside the passengers’ security, their privacy remains a paramount concern. For the same, cameras in the coaches will be installed at the entrance gates only, 2 cameras at each entrance.

Furthermore, the Railways Ministry said that it will install  STQC certified which are capable of working under low-light conditions and in trains running at 100 km/hr. Additionally, the Railways is also looking for the assistance of Artificial Intelligence for an enhanced video capturing and data management system.

Key surveillance companies to look out for

From the initial statements, the Indian Railways is expected to place a massive order for a total of 3,86,000 CCTV cameras. Other than the cameras, the massive surveillance requires a large supporting infrastructure for effective functioning and management. This includes storage systems, data transmission systems, command and control centres, video analytics software, cybersecurity systems, and maintenance and support services.

In total cost of the project could cost between $1 -1.5 billion and is expected to bring large order deals for the large security and surveillance companies. The large security and surveillance companies like Bosch, Honeywell, Siemens, and Kernex Microsystems, which provide CCTV cameras and security infrastructure, are in focus at the moment as key players could also potentially gain orders from the Indian Railways.
