Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri met Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Monday, expressing gratitude for the Centre’s continued support to the state. During the meeting, Agnihotri formally requested an extension of the validity period for all India taxi permits from the existing 12 years to 15 years.
Accroding to ANI, the Deputy CM highlighted that the request aligns with the demand from local taxi operators and the Centre’s vehicle scrapping policy, which allows private vehicles to remain operational for 15 years. A Himachal Pradesh government statement confirmed that Gadkari responded positively, assuring the Deputy CM that the request would be considered sympathetically. He also instructed relevant authorities to take appropriate action on the matter.
Agnihotri emphasized that due to the challenging terrain of Himachal Pradesh, the state’s development is heavily reliant on robust road and bridge infrastructure. He also urged the Union Minister to release the pending Rs 7.63 crore under the Centre’s special capital investment assistance scheme, particularly under the vehicle scrapping incentives.
Push for Road Infrastructure and Highway Status for Key Routes
The Deputy CM proposed the declaration of the Nangal–Jaijon road as a national highway, citing its strategic importance in supporting the upcoming bulk drug park. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth Rs 429 crore has already been prepared and will be submitted to the Government of India under the Gati Shakti scheme.
Additionally, Agnihotri sought the extension of the four-lane NH 503A from Bankhandi (Himachal boundary) to Jhaleda. This 15-km stretch would link key pilgrimage sites—Shree Anandpur Sahib and Mata Chintpurni—providing improved access for devotees and tourists. He also raised the need for enhanced connectivity between Chandigarh and the Baddi industrial area, a matter Gadkari confirmed is under active consideration by the Centre.
Furthermore, Agnihotri sought approval for the upgradation of the Jaijon Modh–Tahliwal Chowk road via Bhai-Ka-Modh and the construction of three bridges, with an estimated cost of Rs 48.69 crore under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF). Gadkari assured that the proposal would be given priority and directed the submission of a DPR under the Gati Shakti initiative.
