India has probably recorded the longest traffic jam in the world — stretching almost 300km — and it’s not Bengaluru. The incident happened on Sunday when a stretch of nearly 300km was jammed because of the Maha Kumbh in Uttar Pradesh. Hundreds of vehicles were stopped in Madhya Pradesh that were headed towards Prayagraj.
India records 300km traffic jam!
The Maha Kumbh attracted massive crowds this year, and many of them were stuck in massive traffic jams. Reports say that vehicles blocked the roads in several districts of Madhya Pradesh. Police were quoted saying, “It’s impossible to go towards Prayagraj today as there is a traffic jam of 200-300 kilometres.”
Reports also say that many vehicles were stuck for over 48 hours, and people say covering 50km took almost 12 hours. According to the Inspector General of Police, the jam was caused by the weekend rush and is expected to ease out in a couple of days. The Prayagraj Sangam railway station was also closed to avoid any untoward incident.
As per the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Kuldeep Singh, the jam was due to a high volume of vehicles trying to reach the Mela site. “The number of vehicles is very high. The passengers are trying to come as close as possible to the Maha Kumbh Mela area. Due to this, there is a long jam,” he said.
