The cat is finally out of the bag. Tesla will be opening its first dealership in Mumbai in July. According to Bloomberg, the much-awaited Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company will finally make its debut on our shores. Recently, Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy said, “Tesla … is more interested in starting showrooms. They are not interested in manufacturing in India.” A Bloomberg report confirms this based on documents which reveal that the first batch of Model Ys is being imported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory in China. Earlier, there were reports that the electric vehicles would arrive from the Berlin manufacturing plant, but Bloomberg states otherwise. It report also states that the EV SUV, Model Y, will be Tesla’s first vehicle in India. The Model Y was first revealed in January this year and was later launched in China, the world’s largest EV market. Let’s take a closer look at the Model Y.

After a lot of speculation, Tesla is finally going to arrive in India, and its first electric vehicle will be the 2025 Model Y, which is also the world’s best-selling EV. The Indian market will get the Model Y rear-wheel-drive version, and according to Bloomberg, the first set of vehicles has already arrived from China. The report further reveals that supercharger components, spare parts, accessories and merchandise have been imported from the Netherlands, the U.S. and China.
The 2025 Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD, a 5-seater electric SUV, offers an estimated range of 574 km (EPA) or 593 km (CLTC). Powered by a single motor, it accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 5.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 201 kmph.
Tesla Model Y: Expected price
The made-in-China Model Y is charged a 70% tariff on being a fully imported electric vehicle, which is under $40,000, excluding additional taxes. According to Bloomberg, the Model Y will cost more than $56,000, which is around Rs 49 lakh without taxes and insurance. It will be interesting to see how Tesla finally prices it because it costs $37,490 in the U.S, which is a shade higher than Rs 34 lakh.
